just wondering what this means if anything...it isn't a real baton , it seems just decorative, and i see one guy who is always carrying it when he is walking around..."captain harris" in Police Academy always had one too

They could signify different things to different departments.
The St. Louis PD for instance had heavy, large oak batons they carry for parade details. They are tapered and called the "table leg", because that's what they look like. They also had heavy brass caps on the ends.
Most people though the brass caps were to cause maximum damage when hitting someone. The brass caps were actually put on them because in the days before radios, beat cops used them to tap manhole covers to signal the officer in the next beat over. 8 taps was a signal to meet and eat. The radio call "signal 8" is still used in that area today. |
