What is your opinion of police officers where you live?

I live in Hualien Taiwan. The police here seem to neglect their duty in enforcing traffic violations. Thus, there are many traffic accidents, injuries, and deaths. I came from the USA, where "traffic citations" were generally feared (most likely due to the resulting increase in insurance rates). Am I nuts to think there is a relationship between effective law enforcement and safe driving? Or, is it only a matter of financial consequences? Do police in your area look the other way, simply because they don't want to do the paperwork required?
FYI: I have long held great respect for law enforcement officers. They have one of the most difficult jobs to perform effectively, and suffer a variety of foul consequences in attempting to do so.

Good for you that you've never had the misfortune of dealing with a NY city or a Suffolk County or Nassau County cop. They are all overpaid blowhards. The majority of them have a Napoleon complex . They are disrespectful, violent, and rude. I have worked for the law and know what I am speaking about. For the dozen or so cops out there who may have a decent bone in their body, they still get a thumbs down from me because they are still part of the 'code of silence' and when they see evil, they do nothing about it. I think the police officers round near were i live are scared of most of the gangs about, they wont approach them so there pretty pointless! |

Pretty boring city. Police have nothing better to do here than get anal about traffic violations. |

actually, police officers here make money by writing tickets. some police officers can actually take things too far in terms of saying what you were doing. if a cop says you were weaving, but you weren't, oh well. its your word against his and the courts usually believe the police officers word above the civilians. |

i have to say im in the us and traffic violation they eat up it makes up there monthly quato. they never pass by and not pull over. there is a cop that sits on my corner waiting for speeders cause of the school up the street. but the drivers are nuts always cutting people off i always wish a cop would be around when they have tried to run me or my kids over because they are in some hurry. it scares me walking out here but i do see the police doing what they can. in washington i have respect for the law also |
