What makes you decide to give a warning or a ticket?
|
I was stopped around 7:50 a.m. I was speeding, when I saw him I pressed on my breaks going 50 by him.. he did a u-turn and pulled me over. Before he even turned on his lights I pulled over. I turned off my car and got the info out. He came up to my car but stood by the back seat of car I said hello He told me why he pulled me over, but said I was going 45. He asked me why I was speeding and I just replied I'm just on my way to work. he asked where I worked so I told him. He then asked for my info and later he came back and said I'm not going to make you pay any money today, your ticket would have been $145 for going 15 over but I'm giving you a warning. He told me have a good morning. and I told him to do the same.
So Out of curiosity. why a W & not a T? I'm thanking my lucky stars of course. I was respectful and polite. I'm a 19 yr. old female and he was I'd say mid20s. What makes you decide T or W? Age? Time? Respect? Is it true "sorry" makes it worse b/c that makes it personal? Additional Details I've only had two tickets in my life one valid the other.. iffy.
I feel like the times I got warnings I should have gotten a ticket and the one ticket I got I should have gotten a warning.
so just curious.

The severity of the violation and your attitude makes the decision. Being polite and cooperative goes a long way. |

Attitude of the person is a big factor, combined with the severity of the violation. If someone is doing 10 or 15 over, they may get just a warning if they are polite. Now if someone was doing 35 over, they'd probably get a ticket anyways. |

it depends on many things. just how serious was their violation. and just how they act |

If you lie to me, area of offense, traffic conditions, road conditions, your driving record. If your nasty you always get a tickety. But, being polite does not guarantee a warning. |

Attitude and respect go a long way in law enforcement.
A short sentence with powerful meaning.
It also helps to shut the car off, have required papers ready, and both hands in a visible location. |

Writing tickets for me depends on the nature of the violation and the drivers attitude. If I stop you for something and you don't argue, and admit what you did and don't give me an attitude I will most likely give a warning. I don't care about making money for the city and hate going to court. I have stopped people before and was set out to give a warning if the license came back clear but the poor attitude and argument why they were stopped got them a ticket. |

If the violation is truly reckless I ticket. Speeding 20+, cutting in and out of lanes, tailgating, rod raging, etc... |

There are some officers out there that will give you a ticket regardless of your demeanor and/or excuses for doing the offense.
Within law enforcement you have guys/girls that choose a certain career path based on their perception of what it is to be a police officer. They have formulated the persona based on what they think they have to say and do within that role.
It's been my experience that officers who work in traffic, tend to take traffic offenses too seriously. It's like you personally sped, run the light, etc to make them mad.
Guys with that menatality are going to write you a ticket regardless. It sounds like you may have had one of those types stop you.
I hope that you don't think all officers are like that. I worked dope for 9 of my 18 years. It has given me a different perspective in what offenders need as corrective measures. I am not one quick to give tickets because they are so expensive. I try to give the benefit of the doubt when I can. One thing that will guarantee a ticket from me is if I catch you in a lie. Then all bets are off and I'll make you an example. |

it could have been that while the officer was in his/her vehicle, that another call of priority came in. i've had that happen several times on stops and merely told the driver to have a good day and then went to my call. sometimes, it is attitude......if someone is polite and respectful AND HONEST, i'll give a verbal or a written warning. now on the other hand, if someone is acting like a total ***, all bets are off and i'm giving the citation. |

just like you said, you went ahead and pulled over, got out your info and you were polite and respectful. These things go a long way. Plus, you said he was also young and he probably remembers well what it felt like to be pulled over at that age. |

Well, you definately have to be a female. Aside from that it's at the officer's discretion. |

A little thing we call officer's discretion. A lot of people are saying attitude...but I try not to let that affect my ticket writing. I'm looking for compliance to traffic laws, not punishing someone because they have an attitude problem. My hands would fall off from fatigue if I wrote tickets for that. I base my ticket writing on the severity of the violation and how much potential danger it could cause. |

Some years ago, I was speeding, DEFINITELY over the limit (80 in a 55) and I was pulled over. I was asked for my info; it was in the car trunk so I got out to get license, wearing short shorts and at that time, I was some eye-candy!
It was 6:30AM and I was 'let go' with a warning, of "if you promise NOT to do this again...."
However, I've since learned that if the policeman has called the stop in, he HAS to issue a ticket. |
