What punishment for an "assault?"?

So one night when i was at a friends house somebody who at the time i would have considered the friend started making fun of my school. Now, i am not the kind of person to care about being fun of, i can handle good fun, but the way he was saying it was obviously meant to be a personally aimed derogatory comment. This person is currently attending the same school but for their graduate degree while i am an undergrad. He continued being an *** for no reason which led me to tell him that i was smarter than him.

Apparently he got deeply offended and/or is very insecure about his own intelligence, but anyways he just built up steam for a couple of weeks. We were both talking to a mutual friend who we both live in close proximity to and i was already over at the friends house. The guy proceeds to come over and while i am sitting on a bar stool, throw me off of it, jump on top of me and choke me. I was very reasonable about the whole thing, and im a very non-confrontational person.

But the more i think about it the more it bothers me that somebody could be so unreasonable, over something as small as somebody saying they believe themselves to be smarter. Keep in mind that in the context of the discussion i wasnt being a douche or anything, merely defending myself as he first affronted a personal attack.

I was wondering if anybody would mind informing me of what type of charges i could press, and what exact form of punishment would be levied against him.

Sorry for the long description but i felt the need to fully explain the situation.

If you don't have the "stones" to defend yourself, you deserve it. My lord, he committed 'battery' not assault. Most 'bar room' fights are thrown out of court. Unless there is grave injury or a weapon was used, no prosecutor wants to "weed out" a bunch of drunks testimony. I have been in dozens and dozens of bar room brawls, arrested many times and never prosecuted. The charges are always dropped on both parties involved.
* assault is verbal, threats etc.
* aggrivated assault is threats to use a weapon on some one.
* battery is physically attacking some one.
*aggravated battery is inflicting grave injury or using a weapon to injure someone.

Charges? For what? Next time someone tries to fight you with their hands, you fight back. Maybe you thought you were being clever while you were 'defending' your school or intelligence, but you were being a worthless idiot when you were too stupid to defend you PHYSICAL BODY! I am not sure if you believe that by calling the police you will have your revenge that you so badly seek but it won't accomplish anything. Maybe you will get him kicked out of school, maybe he will go to jail, but what will that actually do? Humans are physical beings, we all fight, were all violent. I suggest that you train your body and mind for strength so that way next time some mr. macho man comes charging the bull at you you will be able to deflect him into the gutter. Also, buy a gun, learn how to use it.
