What should I do in this predicament?

I was on school property with my friends and this older girl stole my fairly new iPod touch. Now as both my friends were shocked we didn't know what to do until she was out of sight. We told the authorities and after ward an acquaintance of mine tipped me off as to who she was. After a long search on social networks and discussions with some distant friends we found out who she was but also that she has a history of violence and hospitalized one of my friend's sister. Two friends have offered to get the iPod back but the administrators are still looking. Should I let them get the iPod back for me even if she is violent? Or should I tell the authorities I know who she is and have her furious with me?
Both have their pro's and con's but it seems that I have two very determined people on both sides of the options of getting it back. I'm really confused about what I should do.

If you don't involve authorities and she retaliates, you are kind of on your own because no one knows what's going on.
