NFL player delayed by cop in hospital parking lot as mother-in-law dies
http://www.mercurynews.com/breakingnews/ci_12003249
A Dallas police officer drew his gun during a traffic stop of Houston Texans running back Ryan Moats last week in which the officer kept Moats from going to the hospital room of his dying mother-in-law after a rolling-stop at a stop sign.
Ryan Moats and another man remained outside while Powell lectured Moats, wrote a ticket and threatened to arrest him even after being told that by Moats that his mother-in-law was near death inside the hospital. After a delay of about 13 minutes, according to the Morning News, Powell allowed Moats to go inside the hospital, that after hospital staff members and another police officer interceded. Moats's mother-in-law, Jonetta Collinsworth, already had died by the time Moats arrived at her room, according to the report.

He will be ordered to attend additional training.
He will not be fired, as he did not do anything illegal. He was certainly showing a lack of discretion, and his demeanor was not appropriate, but those things are not against the law.
No, I am not justifying the officers actions. I do not agree with the way it was handled, and am personally embarrassed. However, nothing he did violated any laws. I wouldn't be surprised if he quits, because he is sure to catch a lot of criticism from his coworkers who feel the same way I do.
I can tell you I've been in similar situations, and it is quite common for people to embellish the truth, and their definition is not always a true emergency. I always allowed the person to proceed into the hospital, where I confirm the information before making a decision. Had Powell done that here, none of this would have happened. |

He will probably get a negative writeup and a slap on the wrist. |

I think he should be fired, because he obviously has no common sense. Lack of common sense mixed with a gun, badge, and ego is a dangerous combination. Police officers should have compassion for the public, and he clearly does not.
Additional thoughts:
I have to comment to the poster before me, I think following him to the hospital and the nurse coming out to verify to the officer the serious nature of ladies health should have been clues that he was telling the truth. Unless you think it was a whole big conspiracy on the hospitals part to get a millionaire out of paying a $200 ticket. |

I think the officer should pray to god that It was his mother in-law and not his REAL MOTHER!!! Because if that was the senario and I were him It would NOT be pretty!!!
Fire that Douche bag!!!
Post Message:
To "Brain Pain" the post above.
Once his motives became clear he didn't have to lecture him for 13 minutes!! My dad is a cop!! I know.
If you said dont touch my son, and you left the room and he began choking, and died, would it be right to say "WELL YOU SAID DONT TOUCH HIM" There is alway a high road and a low road. That officer took the low road. |

The police officer should be fired. It's debatable whether or not to ticket for running a stop, but the officer clearly had a racial bias. Reports say the nurses came out TWICE to verify his story, and I think the biggest problem was that the officer drew his gun unprovoked. I mean, the stop was done right outside the hospital, so it should have been obvious that there was an emergency of some sort. An officer should also NOT be pulling their weapon on a traffic stop. Even with the recent shootings in Oakland, do you think anything good will happen by threatening someone like that for a rolling-stop? |

He should be fired. We don't need racist white trash cops on the streets.....they belong in a trailer. |

As I can tell he should be fired |

This cop needed to prove something to himself. An As*ho*e in the department. Some let that badge go to their head. This guy showed no compassion and was reprimanded for his unprofessional actions. |

Days after four cops are killed in California a Dallas police officer is chasing a car that is running red lights, reason unknown. The car stops one of the occupants jumps out. The police officer does not know why...ie confront the police officer with violence or to flee, the officer pulls his weapon to defend himself. Then another gets out failing to follow standard instructions to stay in the vehicle and walks toward the police officer. The cop is scared he will have to kill or will be killed. Think of the adrenaline rush, though trained for this confrontation it is not an everyday occurrence.
The police officers perception is that he is confronting a larger group (four people in the SUV) of people who were running from police and breaking the law. It is clear the police officer was behind Moasts and that Moats knew it. Moats also knew he was breaking the law by fleeing. Use of your Hazard lights does not grant permission to break the law. It is warning to watch out for me that's it.
Moats broke the following laws:
Moats ran red lights.
Moats failed to stop for police.
Moats failed to control the passengers of his vehicle and their actions.
Moats failed to stay in the vehicle as instructed
Moats confronted the police officer.
Due to Moats's size the police officer could have been intimidated.
Other occupants and the laws they broke:
Wife failed to follow the instructions of the police officer.
Confrontation of police officer in the performance of his duties.
The other occupants exited the vehicle against the instructions of the police officer.
Moats is lucky the police officer was restraint enough to not shoot him, due to his size (compared to the police officer) he is a threat even unarmed. Due to the multiple threats coming at the police officer this could have been very differant and be justified by law.
The police officer's actions were correct. He handle it as police are trained to. The Policecheif is a coward to not stand behind his policeman and tell the citizens and the criminal world that breaking the law will result in police doing their job. If I was the police cheif I would have had Moats arrested for his activities and the rest of the vehicle's occupants for all of the above crimes and resisting arrest without violance.
SO to answer the question 13 minutes is FAR better than jail |

A SS HOLE COPS! I know being a cop is hard, but I'm so sick and tire of them being on power trips and hurting innocent people over NOTHING! With his money, I'd have decked him knocking him out, gone to see my MIL and dealt with it all later! |

The officer had no proof Moats was telling the truth. People make up all kinds of lies to get out of a ticket.* |

Everyone has to obey the law. Even rich people. Get over it.
The guy should be given a medal, and the guy who was endangering the public should be fined. |
