The first person to answer was correct, schools are easy targets. No matter what passive security you have, unless you have an active defense against these criminals the schools will remain easy targets. Cameras, ID cards, metel detectors, they all can't protect 100%. Banks have security guards to protect our money, why don't schools have armed protection for our children? What about hiring some CCW teachers? |

well the one that happened here in Wisconsin the kid who shot the Principal he came from a broken home and he was abused so you have to look at the parents some what I have a daughter and a son going to school and it is becoming more of a worry everyday |

There is not nearly enough security guards or metal detectors, or gun control laws, etc. to shield schools from people who don't care what happens to themselves.
There's a much deeper and more basic flaw in our society that will not be resolved with laws or enforcement, IMHO. I think it is intimately linked to postmodern thought and the "dictatorship of relativity" added to the long-standing principles of American individualism. Not only purposes are individual-specific, but now truth is as well. How many generations before anarchy prevails? |

Some schools have metal detectors... Most don't. Nor there aren't any security cameras... Many school fights. Yes, there's alot of anger and rasical tension... There were rumors in LA of a shoot out was going to take place when I was in high school... I didn't buy it, but 10,000 students stayed home from school. Swat teams took position. But this rumor was gang relatied over cocaine... It's stupid because no body knows how to deal with problems like adults... So they take there anger out the WRONG way or its what they call a video game... However, after the rumor nothing happend except a few arrest from the gangs gathering up. The racial tension needs to cut down...Its only making problems worse...and its turning schools into prison instead of a learning environment. Yes it is horrible, but it is up to the school district to take initiative to make schools a safer community and as far as I know, they are not doing ****. |

What a shame the way society is. But just remember these lunatics are our friends, neighbors, family etc. We need to keep our eyes open for the signs of psycotic people and stop them well in advance. God bless all of those suffering because of this. |

I agree people thses days r like hell on the ground walking around and they look normal....and then next there like mass killers it's so gay.I cant belive it i wish it would just stop i mean look what the police do they get the guy and then after awhile they get let free or life sentsnce but still they dont care i think that they should go through so they no how bad it feels to be shot i mean come on |

I think that the Amish felt that they were fairly secluded and secure. This horrible tragedy just proves that no one in America can assume that they are safe from crime. It sounds as if this was a planned shooting as well with the perp boarding up the windows of the school first. He must have brought a hammer and nails with him. Public schools did increase security after Columbine but they can't "control" for every act of mayhem unfortunately... |

There's been 1 school shooting in the "columbine" sense of the world.
There was 1 hostage situation that ended with a death, an on campus excursion with a gun that happen every day, and then an actual school shooting today.
The media just loves to sensationalize everything these days
they just never know what story is going to get them the nobel prize.
Notice how school shootings tend to come in bundles?
It's not because they just happen that way, it's because the media loves to sensationalize everything and any little thing that's remotely related to it becomes a huge deal. |

I think that the schools should trust their students enough to not have extremely strict rules and things likes likes tazers and guns in order to control their students.The shootings were wrong, and the school should have stopped the problem before it happened. |

Why do school shootings occur? Well it is little security, especially this Amish school and it really makes people upset to read something like this. There have been three shootings each one was preceeded by something negative about either our government or a politician (Foley and his boy toys this time around).
So why does this happen? It could be to overshadow the political stories (yes, set ups) or it could be that people no longer have respect for life because their leaders are out starting wars with other countries. This causes issues, if your leaders do not value life, why should the people.
Also another thought is that they are now wanting to target gun control. What better way to get people on board than to target little kids in a violent crime where they should be safest, the schools.
Speculation could go on for days. |

I don't understand it either, If it can happen in Amish country it can happen anywhere. I'm homeschooling my daughter and intend to keep doing it. My daughter heard it, and said I'm not going back to school. |
