What things can disqualify a dog from becoming a Police dog?

Agent 268 is absolutely correct. It depends on the individual departments' standards for a police service dog. Some of the things that would disqualify a dog with my department wouldn't necessarily disqualify it from another department.
A few of the things that will disqualify a dog with my department include but are not limited to:

-Poor health

-Being overly rank (a little rank is acceptable if we can determine what triggers it)

-The dog is not trainable

-The dog has very poor or no hunt drive

-Mental instability (this can cover a wide range of areas)

-Freaks out during gunfire, and cannot be corrected

These are just a few, but we try to weed out the 'weak' dogs during our selection test. If a dog passes our selection test, then most likely it will do well in the training phase of our program. Occasionally a 'weak' dog will slip through the cracks and look good during the selection test (this happened recently) then as we get into the training, the deficiencies in the dog surface. The dog is then exchanged through the vendor and often re-sold to another department.

Someone here said "mauling the trainer". In my unit, it's not at all uncommon for a handler to be bitten by his own dog a few times so I disagree with that statement.

Only purebred German Shepherds are considered for the RCMP Police Dog Services. Male dogs are favoured but some females are chosen. In addition to being in perfect physical condition, they must have particular personality traits which make them suitable for police work: even temperament, hunting instinct and sound character are essential. All RCMP dogs are taught to protect their handlers, themselves or to apprehend upon command. Any that display reluctance to do so are not accepted.

The German Shepherd breed displays the versatility, strength and courage that makes it eminently suitable for Canadian police work. Their heavy coats allow them to work under extreme climatic conditions. In addition, their presence seems to have an inhibitive psychological effect on potential wrongdoers. German Shepherds trained to apprehend will invariably make a successful arrest despite the fact they are trained only to hold, never to be savage.

In 1999, the RCMP started a pilot breeding program to produce a working strain of dog most suitable for law enforcement duties. One pup from this program has already graduated to field service and a number of others are currently in training

Depends on the police service's standards for police dogs.

Usually the breed would be german sheppard, and any other breed would be disqualified, medical problems like hip dysplasia and brain damage would be another one.

With my service if the dog has bad nerves (panics when hearing gunfire, etc) they would be disqualified. Dogs can also be disqualified in the middle of training if it isn't going well.

Keep in mind that most of these dogs aren't euthanized for not living up to the standards of the police service, they are found fitting homes instead or traded off to police services with lower standards.

poor eyesight, poor bone structure, failure to advance in dog training.. any of those can cause a dog to be destroyed. i'm sure there are others..

actually since biological warfar is a factor all of us are weapons in the war on organized crime like the police or the Hells Angels, but the best of us play them off against each other while the arab slip into position for the cabbie takeover of NYC and Boston, etc...
but i just joke about the things you consider sacred because i don't care.
