Someone has tagged our electric box twice but I am afraid to remove it. We live in a nice neighborhood but about two years ago several new families moved in and their teens seem to have brought gangs into the area.
I really want to paint over it but am afraid that if they see us doing it they will do something. I am also afraid to leave it. We have young children so all of this is a scary thing.
Would a gang associate my house with this gang that tagged my box? What should I do about it?

Most of those tags are not real gangs, but kids who are want to be.
Paint over any tag as soon as you see it.
They will stop wasting their money on paint and move on to another site.
If you leave the tag there will be more tags along with it.
They are not going to do something if they see you paint over the tag. |

Call the authorities. Most agencies have officers trained in gangs and they can address any concerns you may have. |

You should not be afraid to paint over it. And you should do it as soon as it is discovered. The best way to discourage taggers is to cover it as soon as it is found. They tire of having their tags covered. Also, you should report it to the police because it is vandalism. If the tagger is using the same tag over and over, they may know who it is and be able to charge them. Or if they discover who it is they can charge them later.
Leaving the tagging up just invites more tagging. It also invites rival gangs to come and tag over it, so covering it with the original color is the best method to get rid of it.
The gang bangers thrive on intimidation. If you let them, they win. You should meet with your "good" neighbors to have all of them participate in covering the tagging. This will send a message to the "bad" neighbors. Especially if there are a lot of you.
You have to do this quickly too, because if you delay it sends a message to the gang bangers that there is tolerance, you don't want that. They don't want people to watch them nor do they want the attention of the police. The sooner the police come, the better. |
