Freshman in college studying to go into criminal justice. Doing a report on detectives/police officer work. Have a question on what type of gun they/you guys carry on you?

You're going to get a lot of different answers. Throughout my career, I carried a .38, .357, .44, .45.
Off duty on occasions, I would carry a 9 MM. |

Glock model 22s are common on the patrol level. Glock model 23s are common on the detective level at my husbands dpt. |

Department issue for me is the Glock 17 in 9mm. Back up weapons are optional but encouraged, and I usually carry a Kahr MK9 on my ankle. AR-15's and Remington 870's are carried in the trunk. Most departments are going with the Glock pistols in various calibers. No agency or officer I know authorizes or carries revolvers anymore. |

The large dept where I worked in OH, officers carry a 9mm and Sgts have those, plus they have shotguns in their trunks while they are on duty. |

My dept carries the S&W MP40 cal across the board at the patrol level. I do not know what the detectives carry. |

The agencies in my county carry 9mm, 40 or 45 cal. Glocks. Very few use S&W or Barrettas. I'm not aware of any other makes carried on duty in this area. I think you'll find the brand of choice is the Glock. |

Guns vary by departments. Primarily 9mm, Glocks, Sigs. SandW, some Taurus, Beretta, Ruger. There is no one universal standard issue brand. Hope this helps. |
