The Victorian police in Australia use the .38 calibre Smith & Wesson pistol, plus batons. Some carry capsicum spray but not all. The police are hoping to be issued with Tasers.
Some detectives from specuialist squds may also use shotguns.
The "Special Operation Group" use other weapons. They are armed with an individual sidearm of their own choice, usually an automatic. They are also armed with sniper rifles and assault rifles. |

well, a .40 glock for starters.
i think they only issue tasers to sergeants and above.
edit - old mate says they're still using .38 revolvers. strange. i thought police in all states changed to .40 semi-autos, but apparently not. (i just checked - they're the only ones who don't use semi-autos. fair enough.) there was an incident a while back where two policemen at a routine domestic violence call were killed, one while he was trying to use his speed loader for his revolver. after that i thought they all changed to 15 shot capacity .40 glocks, for the extra stopping power and for ease of reloading. i've never been to victoria so i don't mind being corrected. plain clothes and undercover police wouldn't use revolvers though, they get snagged on clothing, another advantage of the streamlined glock. |
