What would be the best non-lethal improvised weapon to use in case of getting in a fight?

Something that is innocent looking (no baseball bats) that could be easily concealed/carried and wouldn't seriously maim/kill someone. Something that would beat someone and knock them out (they're assumed to be unarmed) fairly easily.

I was thinking a rock or other heavy dense object placed in a sock would work well but I don't know i want a second opinion if something might be better.
Additional Details
I mean something laying around I don't want to buy anything, and yes it's just for self defense...someone keeps threatening to fight me, I'm not worried about being robbed or anything.

First off "knocking someone out" doesn't work like it does in cartoons. Any method you use to cause enough shock to the brain to render a person unconscious has the potentially to kill a person by causing them to bleed into their brain. This is why policemen are prohibited from hitting a person in the head in modern times unless they are justified in using deadly force.

If you are trying to disable a person, you need to hit them in the limbs. Injured arms can't punch; injured legs cannot chase you. Good improvised blunt weapons are walking sticks, a long pouch or sock filled with loose change (especially nickels), or chairs the happen to be around.

If you know ahead of time the person is after you to get in a fight, why even bother worrying about engaging them? Get a restraining order! They're easy to get against people who threaten you with bodily harm and you don't need a lawyer, just a pen and the appropriate form at the court house. If he so much as says anything to you, he goes to jail and you get to laugh at him.

A 4 "D" Cell maglite flashlight does well in a pinch.

A word of caution is in order here if you use some improvised device to harm another person you are subject to assault with intent to do bodily damage charges. If the other person is injured or dies you are the one who will ultimately pay the price.Better make sure it's worth it !

Pepper Spray or a stun gun.

You want to get away from an attacker with a rock you would have to be to accurate to actually stop them.

Both are fast and easily accessable. They even have key chain sprayers now.

you could probably hurt someone pretty bad with hair spray. you could also probably hurt someone with a cellphone, or a shoe.especially high heels

I recommend a Taser. It's not improvised but it will certainly get the job done.

I also would advise you to only use weapons in self defense. If you assault someone with a weapon you could wind up going from a misdemeanor charge to an aggravated misdemeanor or a felony depending on the situation.

when choosing a weapon, one should always consider the likelihood of that weapon being taken from you and used against you.
