What would happen if every one on welfare would have to pass a drug test to get assistance?

You ask that with the assumption that everyone on assistance is also on drugs? I am sure some, O.K. a lot of them are however not everyone is. I know because I am on assistance and have never will never touch drugs. I am on it because of a dead beat dad. I work a full time job and still need assistance. I get medi-cal but used to get cash and food stamps I would pass a drug test and would have then as well. A lot of women are in the same boat as me so it doesn't seem fair to just assume all on aid are druggies.

I'll go you one further: Instead of hiring civilian government workers, why don't we say that in order to collect welfare, you have to actually WORK for the state or US government......public daycare workers, mail carriers, etc. EARN your welfare check by actually working, instead of sitting at home watching soap operas and reruns of Jerry Springer.

The state's welfare laws are there to help someone out of their slump. Most of these on welfare have children. If they only allowed welfare to those that pass a drug screening process, poverty and parentless children would be a bigger problem than it already is. Drug addiction is a very serious problem and needs to be addressed differently. Welfare is a whole different issue.

I have to pass a drug test for my job. It is only fair that people taking the money I gave back to (was taken by) the government have to pass the same test!

It is an improbability that all of welfare recipiants are using drugs. Therefore, if we weeded out the ones who are, more money could be divided among the people who are more deserving. I just dont want to see the handouts being abused like this couple did. They had just come back from an afternoon motorcycle ride all decked out in Harley Davidson gear and each with matching brand new bikes. Walked into the grocery store that my mom works at and paid for a weeks worth of food with food stamps. Does anyone else see the problem here?

EDIT: I guess Bea has never been by a welfare office. You will see more $100 pairs of shoes, Lincoln Navigators, rims, stereo systems, etc. then if you were to go to the rich neighborhoods in a city.

Ilovemytc- Have you ever heard of personal responsibility? This is why I am cool with someone who has sustained a job for 3-5 years being able to get assistance for a short time period but not someone who refuses to work, as my mom did for a couple of years. Socialism (which is what welfare is) has no place in the United States.

first of all, that would be assuming that people applying for welfare likely have a drug problem, which is actually a misconception of the majority of the u.s. populous...second, jobs test for drugs so their insurance is lower....third, if the country would stop shoving materialistic bull crap down everybodies throats, people on welfare would not feel the need to compete in the material possession(nikes, fake nails, nice purses, etc...) battle, fourth, why should they control what people on welfare are eating when a) they are medical guinea pigs for our doctors...and b)middle income folks eat the same garbage...WHY IS THE JUNK FOOD BEING SOLD IF IT IS NOT A VIABLE CHOICE...also....guy that is upset that taxes go to welfare.....are you aware that less than 1 penney per check is actually going to a welfare recipient...do you think 225$ a month is alot to live on? did you know that in most states you can only be on welfare 1 year before you are forced to get a job or volunteer for the state?....most states it is less time than that....that allowance is just for mothers with newborns.....in all states, the fathers of the children on welfare are persued by the state to pay back all welfare debts as child support to the state for supporting the child?......who are you people? do some self education...before you start bashing a system for the wrong reasons!
