would i have 24 hours to show it to the dmv, chp, given a ticket and fined 500 and have my car impounded or lastly have my licence suspended?

Depends on your state - usually you have 24 hours to prove insurance in which case you are issued a ticket for failure to have documentation. If you do not and cannot produce insurance then expect a ticket for lack of insurance which usually carries a fine of at least 500 and loss of driving privileges for 6 months and HUGE insurance rate increases. In my state it also gets you 6 points.

I'm not sure about Ca., but in NJ, you would be issued a summons, and have your vehicle towed.
You would be given a court date with a mandatory appearance. If you could show that your vehicle was insured on/before you were issued the summons, they would drop the charge to "Failure to exhibit documents". If you were not insured at the time you would get a fine, lose your license for up to 1 yr., and pay court costs.
Again I am only going by the state I work in. You should call the court that issued the summons. A lawyer would help also. Uninsured vehicle is a serious offense.

I got a no insurance ticket in LA.
Here is the current law:
You could receive a traffic ticket ($1,000 or more) if you get pulled over by a peace officer and cannot provide evidence of financial responsibility. If you are ticketed you’ll have to go through the court system (and not the DMV) to clear or sign such a citation.
Your vehicle could be impounded and you could be fined.
You could be financially responsible for damages associated with an auto accident you had any part in causing. That means being personally liable and forced to pay for any injuries or damage. |

You would be issued a citation for no proof of insurance with a court date. If you could prove you had insurance in force when the ticket was written it would probably be reduced to a non moving violation or dismissed. |
