Time would reverse, the earth would spin backwards, and the universe would come to a fiery end. Before all that, though, your transmission would have fallen out onto the road. |

You would not be able to shift into reverse, speeding down the highway!! |

You'd severely damage your vehicle's transmission system. |

Your transmission would be toast. |

Call me for an emergency highway tow, and I'll give you an estimate on a brand new or rebuilt transmission for your vehicle. I am the "Serpico" of auto mechanics. |

Your engine would explode from the compartment it sits in...well, maybe not, but it wouldn't be good for your car, or the people around you. It would be fun to watch though, where & when?? |

these are some dumb answers. Here's what would happen, depending on if the car is auto or stick.
stick: you could not shift into reverse. Try it - the shifter will not go into reverse, if you push hard enough you may make some loud grinding noises, damage the dog teeth or synchronizer, break the gear selector, but you won't get it into the gear.
automatic: nothing would happen, you will hear a loud clicking noise but the car would not come to a halt or start going in reverse, it will just slow you down. I've been in a car when the driver did it accidently, and that's what happened. just brake and shift back into gear and its fine. I'm sure its not good for the transmission, but it doesnt blow up.
One thing that will definitely, absolutely not happen is the "ENGINE BLOWS UP". if anything were affected it would be the transmission, the engine flywheel keeps spinning in the same direction either way. |

It would probably be difficult to actually force the car's transmossion into reverse while moving forward. If you actually did it:
The best thing that would happen is your drive wheels lock up and you come to a screeching halt.
The worst thing would be you lose control of the vehicle and get into a horrific crash.
The likely thing that would happen is you would ruin your transmission. |

you would drop your transmission |

Try it, the car will make crazy noises and as you look in the rear view mirror as your slowing down, you might be abel to see your transmission fall to pieces. |

Your transmission would leap out of your engine like Oprah at a bulimia convention. |

You would drop your transmission at anything over about 20MPH, and you could pretty much kiss the car goodbye after that. |

I think that you would probably mess up your transmission |

Probably not do your transmission any favors, ya think? |

I'd imagine it'd be injurious to the transmission. |

Time would reverse and you would get younger, and your car would get newer. IF you were going fast enough when you shifted into reverse you could reverse the Earth's rotation which would ruin everyone's day! |

You would destroy the transmission. |

I actually saw someone do this, except they were entering the highway via an on-ramp. Apparently they were in a borrowed car, and were used to driving a standard transmission, not an automatic. They stepped on the brake, thinking it was the clutch, and threw the car into reverse thinking they were changing gears. The car shook like crazy and looked like maybe it blew a tire..then it started going BACKWARDS. Sadly, I was behind the vehicle at the time. Suddenly I had a car, in reverse, coming at me on the on-ramp to the freeway. I slammed on my brakes, but that didn't stop the other car. I sat helpless as it slammed into me. Were it not for numerous witnesses, I would have been blamed for the accident because it appeared that I rear ended the other vehicle!
In fact, her insurance company tried using that to absolve her of culpability in this fracas, so our two insurance companies split the damage costs. What a nightmare! |
