What would happen to prisoners if pot was legalized federally?
Find answers to your legal question.

What would happen to prisoners if pot was legalized federally?

I acknowledge there's a big difference between decriminalizing something and legalizing something. What would happen to the prisoners at the state level if decriminalized? What would happen at the federal level if legalized? Can it be decriminalized at the federal level or only legalized?

Bottom line: THC is used for medicinal purposes in smoke form and in pill form.

Alcohol and Tobacco serve no good and are responsible for the most deaths in our youths annually.

Alcohol and tobacco serve no health benefits and are legal.

Knowing all these facts pretty much guarantees it will be decriminalized. Our government can run all the above the influence commercials they want it's not going to deter anyone. The can also selectively not run anti-alcohol commercials... think about it you see don't drink and drive commercials... how about don't drink at all commercials?

Why? Because our government won't talk trash on something they tax... Yea to be above the influence starts with not drinking or smoking tobacco but since they make the government money lets pick the less harmful product and criminalize an entire class of people.

This is why I know it's coming... the truth won't stay hidden from the majority especially since 2 legal THC forms are used medicinally.

I wish I could say the same about alcohol and tobacco but it's quite the opposite rather they kill the most people annually.

The law is a joke and will not last another decade at the federal level is my prediction.

Enough of my sidebar comments just wondering what would happen to the prisoners in the different outcomes.

the prisons would be far more chilled!

Ok first off, they would not be released. They committed a crime. They are being punished for doing something illegal. Just because it is made legal does not change the fact that they broke a law and knew there was punishment involved with their actions, that is why they are in jail or prison. Second, they wouldn't get to smoke it. It would be considered a contraband, just like alcohol because it is mood altering.

ADDITIONAL COMMENT: Those people are in jail for doing something illegal. Its the principle. The fact that they knew they were braking a law. Its one thing to be a pot head if pot is legal, its another to commit a crime. They are not in jail for being dope smokers, they are in jail for being law breakers, changing the laws does not change the fact that they were broken when they were valid laws.

I believe they would still be serving their sentences. The crime was committed when it was a crime. They knew it and have to serve their sentences out.

Laissez-Faire Guy
If pot were legalized at the federal level, I'm sure the bill would include provisions to release all the prisoners currently serving federal jail time for pot crimes.

The states have different laws. Some would probably make their laws match and release the prisoners, and some wouldn't.

Bobsmith has it right. It doesn't matter if the law was changed, those serving sentences for violating those laws would not be released.

Cocaine and opium also have medical purposes. It does not mean those drugs need to be legalized either. Many prescription drugs are also abused and sold illegally. If someone is dealing drugs illegally they will serve out their sentences that they received for being drug dealers regardless of the changes to the laws. Your argument is week and illogical.

EDIT:
Don't ask a question in here then get upset if you don't like the answers. If someone is in prison they will serve their sentence. If someone is in prison they have committed a felony of some sort. You are not talking about some pot head with a dime bag. You are talking about people that are dealing or possessing dealer amounts of weed.

Actually alcohol has numerous health benefits. Flavoids combine with alcohol in wine to produce numerous positive health effects on the body when drinking wine.

The rich whole grains used to brew beer are sources of vitamins.

Even hard liquors such as whiskey are being shown to have positive effects on the heart and blood systems as well as the prostate.

Tobacco, while extremely cancerous, does have nicotine which is good for the heart.

Pot is not inherently harmful, but it can be abused just like everything else.
