I work second shift wich leaves my wife home alone untill 1am, i want a gun to be in reach incase she needs to protect herself. We live in NC if you need that info for gun laws. Additional Details "violence is not the answer" well it may have to be when someone is breaking into my home, and is trying to do harm to my wife.

Get her a Glock - very lightweight - and PLEASE make sure she takes lessons!! |

While I'm deployed, my wife has a small arsenal. She can use the shot gun first. It's a simple "point and click" weapon. My son have my AR 15 and access to my SW 45. Both of which he is MORE than capable of using very accurately.
My middle daughter will just talk the intruder to death..... |

Caliber . 45 pistol is the best weapon to repeal a sudden attack because of its impact. |

You want a gun with stopping power. So you want to get a higher caliber gun and a .45 would be good.
I like the Glocks a lot. They're a lot lighter than many of the other guns and you can also get the concealed versions (they're smaller).
However, the thing about a gun, regardless of caliber, no one at the wrong end of the barrel thinks "Oh, that's a .22, it PROBABLY won't kill me." No matter what, an attacker will likely think very hard about moving at the end of any gun.
With that said, just about any quality weapon your wife feels comfortable shooting would be good.
Take her to a shooting range. They allow you try out several models especially if you're planning on buying. If not, they'll rent you the guys at a small fee to shoot.
The most important thing is your wife is comfortable with the weight and handling of the weapon. She should also get lessons on maintenance and shooting. Guns need to be cleaned regularly for optimal performance. She should also take it for shooting regularly to maintain proficiency. |

Personally the best guns for home defense is a shotgun..a shotguns shot increasing spreads the farther it is from the barrel..so you dont have to really aim it like a pistol...you just point and shoot....anything it hits it destroys......depending on how big your wife is and how strong she is will determin what gun gage to get...if she is big enough you should get a 12 gage...my wife is 109 lbs and has shot mine but it is a little to much for her...however its only gonna take 1 shot..brands to choose for reliability would be remington 870 express...browning..DONT purchase a mossberg they jam and are junk
.if you choose a pistol again depending her size...a smith and wesson.38 will do if she is small...my wife can handle the .38 as well as i can. if she is a little bigger and can handle it id go for a larger calibur....in your choice of handguns make sure to get a revolver...the are the most reliable and will fire everytime...if you choose a pistol with a clip you run the risk of a jam and your wife wont have enough experience to get it unjamed in time..
whatever you do make certain that your wife takes a gun safety course if your not that experienced to teach her....Also practice shooting everyweek so she is familiar with the gun and its safe operation..too many times have i seen beginers women (and a few men) point their gun at others unintentionallly while loaded.....You must teach her safe operation ....after several weeks of shooting you can go out monthly to practice shooting.......women are able to pick up shooting faster then men in some cases so you two can have fun on the range campeting....
DONT YOU EVEN THINK ABOUT MOSSBERG LIKE THAT OTHER GUY SAID they are cheap because they are junk...ive hunted and shot skeet with several people that own mossberg and they all have bought other guns because they jam too much....dont let anyone tell you its because the guns were dirty because they were always kept clean |

at home with no neighbors close?....some sort of auto shotgun, maybe a 20 ga with buckshot....neighbors close?..drop it to # 4 shot, not #4 buckshot,birdshot..wont go through walls...way out in the woods?..get her a .223 rifle, some sort of semi auto...thats the BEST defense gun...if you want a pistol, get a .357 revolver...4in barrel...but since you live inside NYC...get a dog...now one thing...a pistol is the last resort of a self defense weapon...a lot of them get used because its so easy to carry, its more likely to be close at hand so everybody thinks its the best choice....its at the bottom of the pile of picks actually.....get a .357 revolver if you have to have a pistol...but I dont recommend one if you are not going to be carrying it around a lot |

Mossberg 12 gauge pump with riot gun stock and grip.
You can pick one up at a local gunshow for under 200 bucks, they are easy to handle at close range, great fear factor, loud noise. bullets won't continue on a mile long trajectory hitting bystanders, and no pain in the *** handgun background checks |

What about a dog? An attentive dog is worth its weight in gold. It will alert you to a problem before you hear it and most criminals will choose an easier target.
I have 2 dogs right now and 1 is very alert, the other is huge. His size alone scares people. They don't know he's the dumbest dog around (Bloodhound)
Guns......
I have a .45 Kimber. It's beautiful! But it's best for me because it's single stack so it fits in my hand. It's heavier so the recoil isn't severe like it is with a Glock which is mostly plastic.
The best way to determine what's best for your wife is to go to a shooting range where you can use various hand guns.
For me, a double stack is too wide for my hand. I hate our Glock. It's too wide and too lightweight. The recoil is horrible.
The 9mm Baretta is a good size for my hand but as you know, a 9mm doesn't have a lot of stopping power.
It's mostly metal and a lot heavier than the Glock. Same for the Colt .45.
One of the easiest guns to learn to use is the shotgun. No need to worry about over-penetration, aiming and making a kill shot, turning the safety off, etc. Shotguns are very easy to learn how to use and it's basically point and shoot. You can buy a shotgun with a shorter barrel than the typical "hunting" shotgun.
If your wife isn't comfortable with using a gun, if there's *any* doubt in her mind, don't buy one. If she's fine with it, she needs to have proper training. Your local shooting range/gun store will have that information.
Both of you need to take a gun safety class and also shooting classes. There are many things that you need to be aware of when shooting- things you don't think about such as over-penetration.

On Thursday, August 14, North Carolina`s Right to Carry reciprocity law officially went into effect. This law gives valid carry permit holders from states that have similar permit issuing requirements as North Carolina the ability to carry their firearms for personal protection in North Carolina, and has led several states to recognize North Carolina permits. The North Carolina Department of Justice (NCDOJ), headed by Attorney General Roy Cooper (D), has identified the following states as those which have an official reciprocity agreement with North Carolina: Arkansas, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Idaho, Kentucky, Michigan, Montana, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, and Virginia. The NCDOJ will continue to develop and maintain the list of states that meet the standards for establishing reciprocal agreements. Those on the Internet can look for updates on reciprocity, as well as regulations regarding the carrying and transportation of firearms, by going to http://www.jus.state.nc.us/cle/Concealedhandgun.htm. Congratulations to all NRA members in North Carolina who worked so hard to ensure passage of this important NRA-backed reform! Our thanks go out to all lawmakers who voted for SB 33, but be sure to thank those who worked hard to ensure this legislation became law. Those who deserve special thanks are: Sen. Scott Thomas (D-2), the primary sponsor of SB 33; Reps. Mark Hilton (R-88), Michael Gorman (R-3), Pryor Gibson (D-69), and Michael Decker (D-94), who sponsored identical legislation in the House; Reps. James Black (D-100) and Richard Morgan (R-52), the Democrat and Republican Speakers of the House; Senate President Pro Tempore Marc Basnight (D-1); Governor Michael Easley (D); and Attorney General Roy Cooper.
Only Wisconsin and Illinois flatly refuse to recognize the right of law-abiding citizens to carry firearms for self-protection against criminal attack.

Self defense is a basic human right. My right to an effective means of self defense is basic and universal. It is more fundamental than even the Second Amendment to the Constitution of the United States. Claiming the right to self defense in a philosophical sense is relatively easy; practicing it in a safe and legal manner is more difficult.
Hope this helps! Email me if I can be of any more help.

get a shot gun a 12gauge or a 20gauge (semi-autos dont kick much) load the first shot with triple 000 ( these are .38cal rounds) then follow it up with double 00 there are nine .32 cals rounds in there ifthat doesnt work then pray
do not get a pistol it is a false sense of security unless you are qualified and trained try to hit a moving target with one round while you are scared to death I like the odds of several projectiles headed down range |

I would go with a smaller .45, and not a 9 mm. In all cases, if someone who is hopped up on something is shot with a 9 mm there are more than 2 shots used to stop them, which is excessive force. A .45 is less likely to be shot more than 2 in any confrontation. I hope that this helps. Also to ensure that your wife will use the pistol, have her pick it out, since her hands are probably smaller than yours, and take her to a range, teach her how to use it, so she won't feel inadequate.
Just the sound of a pump action 12 guage shot-gun is paralizing to any intruder, in case you were thinking of that route.
Also, post it somewhere on the windows of your house that any intruder is risking being shot, that way any intruder can't sue you or your wife for shooting them. |

glock 9mm or glock 40 would be your best bets they are easy to maintain and very rare need cleaned. |

I would stay away from the 9mm and the 40 cal. If the person is big, on drugs, or just insane it won't stop them with one shot. It could take several. I like the 45 and use a round called the hydroshock. It expands quickly and will not go completely through the person and hit innocent bystanders. It will knock down all humans. I wouldn't use a shotgun in the home. You have to swing the barrel and may not have the room to do so in some instances. I would get a heavy frame to reduce recoil. The lighter frame 45 will kick more. In Texas we have a law that says basically that if you break into my home I have the right to kill you. If you crawl back outside, or it takes 2 shots, so what. You shouldn't have been in my house. A big dog is a good first line of defense. I know it is an extreme, but I prefer the Tibetan Mastiff. With him I really don't need my pistol. Another good breed for that is the Caucasian Mountain Dog. They are hard to find though. Chows are excellent guard dogs and naturally are protective with out training. I had a white one until he died of old age. As far as guns though, get her to go with you to buy one and then take her to the shooting range and teach her how to load and shoot and clean the pistol. Shotguns are nice out doors, but not practical inside, unless it is a sawed off. But then those are still messy inside the house. |

any pro will tell you that a pump shotgun with the shortest barrel, unchoked is the best. Load with #6 bird-shot. It has a large spread pattern and will cover the average living room bedroom etc. #6 shot will not penetrate walls and cause harm to people in neighboring houses/rooms. Nothing chills like the sound of a round being chambered. if up close the #6 shot will have enough density to put someone down hard. can be operated when scared, takes little or no real sight picture because of spread of shot and stings like ####. Maybe a heavier load in 3-4th load but it should not be needed. |

A shotgun with the proper training to use it.
Something like a Mossberg 500 HS410. Designed for defensive use in short range situations such as home defense it can be a very useful weapon. Its also designed to be easier to use by novices so its somewhat smaller then the average shotgun and can thus be beneficial to women who might have small hands. Its also designed in such a way that it seeks to not penetrate through walls as much as a typical shotgun blast, and has a wide spread to make it difficult to miss.
Of course, the nice thing about having a gun in general and a shotgun in particular is that you shouldn't have to use it. The intimidation factor alone should be enough to protect your home and cause criminals to run away. Shotguns are much more intimidating then handguns, its also a good bit more difficult to accidentally shoot one's self in a vital area with a shotgun.
Remember, having you and your wife both trained to use the weapon is the most important part. If she is afraid of the gun she probably won't be a convincing threat to a criminal, and could end up making matters worse for herself. I recommend the training before purchasing the gun, that way she can find something she is comfortable with. People have different tolerances for recoil, and being able to have experience with some different guns would be good for her. |

If you get a shotgun, PLEASE do not use birdshot. See http://www.theboxotruth.com/docs/bot3_2.htm to compare how different shotgun loads penetrate -- Birdshot will not penetrate enough to be an effective stopper. Also, don't believe the myth that shotguns have an amazing spread. The average shotgun 00 buck round spreads 1" for every yard the projectiles travel.
Presonally, for a non-shooter, I'd get a Glock in 9mm, a Surefire light, and lots of ammo for practice until they become comfortable shooting the weapon. |

I would get a shotgun. If someone is breaking into your house and you feel threatened, youre adrenaline will be pumping and you will be nervous as hell; therefore you will be shaking. With a handgun it would be hard to hit a target while under that kind of stress. With the pattern of the buckshot from a shotgun, you do not need to be as accurate as with a handgun. The effective range of a shotgun is usually about 50 yards. The odds of hitting the intruder are much higher with a shotgun. |

The best gun for her is the one she is most comfortable with and the one she is most proficient with. I would say nothing smaller than a .38 special or 9 mm. You could also consider a shotgun but just remember the myth about short barreled shotguns is that you don't have to aim just point and shoot and the shot will hit everything in the room. Truth is that a full choked 12 ga. with #4 buckshot has a pattern not much bigger than a pistol group of 5 or 6 rounds save for a few stray pellets. So you must practice with these guns as well. After all if the bulk of your buckshot load hits a wall or a piece of furniture and only a couple of pellets hits the bad guy then you've only pissed him off. You should really go to a range or gun shop where you can try several types and calibers of guns in order to find which works best for her or you. Also you should consider the layout of your house and whether you have kids or not is another consideration. Consult a knowledgeable person about the types of ammunition that do not over penetrate walls thus hitting other people in the house. Then get proper training and shoot often at the range. Sounds like a lot but if you're willing to take on the responsibility of using deadly force you better know what you're doing. If you're planning on buying a gun, loading it, putting it in a drawer until you need it and then just pulling it out and start shooting forget it. |

I have a taser and a pump action 12-guage.
I have trained my family that if they feel threatened they are to pick up the taser and pull the trigger. Then grab a cell phone and lock themselves in the bathroom. Once in the bathroom grab the 12 guage and pump a round into the chamber, then dial 911 on the cell phone.. |

as an officer, i would strongly suggest an alarm system before a weapon, but if you want a good small handgun go with Glock 27 but if you want something a little bigger, get a Glock 23.
there pretty safe weapons. but they are only .40 cal. if you want stopping power, get a .45
or the .50 cal desert eagle hahahahha |

North Carolina has no self defense laws to protect it's citizens! If you injure or kill someone breaking into your house or trying to hurt your family or you, you will most likely be tried and convicted. |
