Whats it really like in jail?

it's not too bad,If you don't get caught with drugs or a mobile,you don't fail a drug test,you don't get into debt to the gangs,your pad-mate doesn't get shipped or get out and pass what he owes to a gang onto you,i.e you pay his debt.Also you don't get caught holding drugs/mobile for someone else,if that happens you will have to pay for it/them.Even if you're a member of a gang a rival mob might decide to do you to warn the rest of your gang.You could be threatened so members of your family are forced to send money to some one they don't know.Cause too much agro you'll find screws attempting to twist your arms into new and interesting positions.But hey,you get gym,a tv,some food and canteen.That makes it worth it,don't it?

I am not a criminal and have never served time in prison, however I do have some knowledge with regard to the current prison system in England & Wales.

In Her Majestys Prisons expect lots of bullying and assaults, lots of overcrowding and lots of lock up time due to the current strain being put on the system by New Labour dragging it's feet with regard to prison building, with press reports today suggesting that the three planned titan jails will now be abandoned due to Government spending cuts.

Some Prisoners in England & Wales are locked up 23 hours a day, however this varies from prison to prison. One of the worst prisons in terms of conditions is HMP Pentonville, which has been shamed in a number of prison inspection reports in recent years.

There were a total of 18,659 attacks by prisoners on other inmates in 2008, up 46 per cent since 2002, while assaults in young offenders institutions more than doubled.

Well i think all prisons are different.
But I did visit The North Carolina Correctional Center for Women for the Governor's Page Program

There they help you get your GED and a college offers them 2 classes they can major in and they get to learn how to make the dentures for people or they have a horticulture class they teach you somethings they also earn money there for the jobs they do and if you've been there for awhile that's how much you earn based on the job and things, they don't get real money its all on a card with their picture.

5 people who were there talked to us about what its like and what they do there and it was really interesting to learn about those things.
They also have like their own little system like court I guess if you do something bad they write you up and you have to pay for it too and you go in front of the judge they hand down punishment.

But really I think their all different because my Biology teacher used to work at a mens prison and its different from what I explained there.

Edit: I just saw your addtional details there I'm not really sure about the UK I would just look it up.
