When a police helicopter is looking for a suspect at night, do you turn your porch lights on or off?

It doesn't matter. Police helicopters have several very bright search lights on them. Makes it look like daylight outside.

I think you should turn them on not only that because there is a police helicopter hovering over but every night would be nice. Why? Most criminals donot like lighted places, they prepare dark as in so darkess night, lonely night. And if in instances you left your light turn off but you notice that a police helicopter is moving above, don't turn your lights on, it will attract the cops to look in your direction for no apparent reason and might mistaken your place as being invaded.

It helps if the porch light is on every night, not only for the police looking for suspected persons but your own safety and precautionary measure at night. Remember most crimes are done esp. at night.

They would help the police on the ground. The spotlight the helicopter has lights a place like daytime but it never hurts to turn on outside lights to help assist the folks in the cruisers.

I think I would turn the porch light on just so the cops know someone is home. They are less likely to use heavy rounds when they see a shadow in the shrubbery near your windows. If they want the porch light turned off, they are real good at barking out instructions with the bullhorn. That's been my experience.

How many people go fleeing the police in your rural town? I live in Chicago and the only time I see a helicopter is when they are reporting the traffic at 5am and waking my sorry *** up. And yes, the Chicago Police have a helicopter. They don't know what to do with it, but they have one.

I always turn my car headlights off and hide.I've never broken the law,but i always feel like someone's looking over me sholder.I guess that sounds dopey.

the lights hurt the copters effort as the pights create a washout effect on the night vision cameras whether infra red or star light type.

best thing to do is turn out the light.

The odds of a suspect running through your yard isn't very great. Just for the sake of argument, if a suspect did cross through your yard, your 60 watt porch light will neither hinder nor help a helicopter's pursuit. Try googling, "FLIR". It's a pretty awesome system.

Don't know what your police helio is equipped with but most use a minimum of infrared at night. That can see the heat signature of a mammal alive or decomposing. Porch light will not affect that. If they have better night sight equipment a light will wash out a bad guy hiding on your porch but again most modern equipment can compensate automatically.
In general as far as police are concerned the light and an address on the porch are wonderful things. Please no bright lights in the officers eyes.

shut the lights off..it helps on the inferred camera...and if the copter is not using one..then they still have a huge candlelight power spot light that will drown out the porch lights anyways.

Unless he is hiding "on" your porch it won't make a damn bit of difference...better you grab a flashlight and help in the search for the would-be scumbag..!!
