Let's say I asked them what it was for, but the cop just said "I think you need a lawyer!"

No, they do not have to tell you why you are being handed a summons, that is what the summons is for, If you do not understand the summons contact an attorney. If you cannot afford an attorney contact a legal services agency in your area, many areas have a legal services group that provide free or low cost services to indigent people.
This is not like being arrested or charged with crime in which case the police have to tell you why. A summons is for you to appear in court and does not have to be served by a police officer. Most likely you were served by a deputy sheriff. The sheriff's department is usually the first to try delivering a summons, if they fail a process server or detective is sometimes hired to deliver.
Summons are sometimes civil in nature, someone might be suing you. Summons can also be issued in criminal cases, but I'm sure if this were the case you would have previously been charged with a crime and you would know about that.
A summons is different from a subpeona. A summons is a notice of some type of legal action against a defendant. A subpoena is a notice to appear in court, a subpoena is usually delivered to a witness and does not mean the person being served is being charged.

They do not have to tell you what the summons is for.Summons is usually if they want to talk to you about something you may have seen. |

Most times a summons means that you have been subpoenaed as a witness for something though I'm not positive. In the instance that you gave, if you actually needed a lawyer, I think the cop would be arresting you, not handing you a summons. |
