Yes of course you can call 911. Any time you feel that you need authorities or paramedics to come help you.

When things as little but painful as the things that have been listed happen, calling 911 should be a last resort. First call a friend or relative and see if they can drive you to the hospital, but if no one can help you, then call 911 and explain that you dropped 5olb on your foot, are in serious pain, and cannot drive or find anyone to drive you to the hospital.

yes you can 911, you are in pain. Because you have no way of getting there you will need a ambulance to drive you there. But be sensible about the situation and really think about it.
Plus you have the ex cuse you are alone, have no car to get there.

Life threatening? huh. some answers say only this is cause to dial 911. what if you look out your window and your car is leaving the driveway (being stolen) , guess you can't call, huh, your life is not in danger, right.... or someone is standing at your neighbors bathroom window peeking in, there are many scenarios when you can call 911 other than "life threatening" situations, so don't always assume you have the all the right answers ( those of you who said, life threatening only)

If you are in pain or have a genuine injury, you are entitled to call 911 for any of those reasons. They are there to serve the community, it is their job. But keep in mind, emergency services are not free! You can incur expenses for being transported to the hospital by ambulance! If you absolutely need the services, then never hesitate, but if there is another way to get to the hospital, a neighbor, friend, etc. use that option first.

If you need serious urgent medical attention, and you have no way to get that without an ambulance, then dial 911. Broken bones are generally a medical emergency,and if you have, or may have, broken a bone, you should call 911. Burns can be very serious, particularly grease or fat burns. A relative of mine got liquid burns a few years ago, we took her to the local hospital without an A&E (emergency room) and they just called an ambulance to take to the local major hospital. Other medical emergencies include any blow to the head (or any other part of your body) that caused you to lose consciousness, even for a second, anyone who is currently unconscious and cannot be woken up, anyone who had numbness and/or tingling in the extremities after trauma (fall, being hit by a car etc.) in which case they should not be moved without a spinal board unless there is a serious risk to life, bleeding that will not stop or spurts, partial paralysis, chest pain and/or pain radiation through the left arm, and difficulty breathing.

Both of the cases given in your question would justify calling 911. Broken bones in particular would justify calling 911. Some broken bones can sever blood vessels, and in any case, they need to be set by a medical professional, and you will need some pretty serious pain killers. A crush injury such as the one you describe, a fall or an impact can all do other damage, that you need to be checked for as soon as possible.

As to other reasons to call 911, you should use 911 for the police if there is an ongoing crime of any real seriousness (jaywalking, littering probably not) such as breaking and entering, any violence, criminal damage, theft. Also where there is a matter requiring urgent police attention, especially if there is a danger to life. Down power lines that are sparking, or any vehicle displaying yellow or orange markings or any hazard warnings that has hit anything, or is on fire or otherwise in danger should be reported immediatelly to the police or fire department. Which one depends on where you are, the emergency operator should know which one. Any vehicle that has hit another vehicle or obstacle and has come to a stop should be reported. If the vehicle is leaking fuel or is on fire, report it to the fire department, if someone is injured to the medical authorities. Otherwise it should be reported to the police, as it is likely to be a crime scene, and may be a hazard to other road users. Any fire, of any size, that is not under control, or is where it should not be, should be reported to the fire department, however small. Fire spreads. Even if you think it is out.

Anything that causes serious pain would warrant emergency medical attention. If you are screaming, then you should probably call 911. If you have suffered an injury that prevents you from moving normally, that would also warrant calling 911.

I work fill in sometimes as a 911 dispatcher and you would be surprised at the calls we get. For instance last spring I worked there on a day when there were tornado warnings, their was a huge black circulating wall cloud almost on the ground, the tornado alert sirens were activated and people were ringing our phones off the wall wanting to know what the sirens were for, I mean seriously, look out the damn window people!
Anytime you need help for any reason you can call 911.

yes!both the things you discribed are emergencies.thats why 911 is there.if you feel its an emergency then it is.when in doubt call anyways. its better to be safe then sorry.

during a argument with someone or lock your keys in a car or a car accident where someone just bump you , lost animals, why would you call 911 for your feet call the ambulance
