When can the police not chase you?

I heard that in Florida at least, if a cop tries to pull you over for a minor violation he can't legally chase you. Is that just a myth?

I think I may have been rather vague with the term "chase." I mean if someone ever so slightly rolls through a stop sign(or some other minor thing), do they have to pull over for a cop or can they just keep on driving? Can they somehow force you to stop? I'd assume if that happens and you take off at 100mph they can get you for speeding, but if you just keep going at the speed limit can they follow you and force you off the road or something?

I don't know Florida law on this specifically, but I suspect that this some sort of department policy as opposed to law. In this area different departments have different chase policies. For example some might not chase for a minor violation like a traffic violation or petty larceny and up until recently one department wouldn't chase a stolen car. On the other hand some departments will, whether they get involved in a chase or not most will contact the State Highway Patrol which has a very liberal chase policy and can usually assist.
One department I know always chases because they will charge you if you run with Felony Fleeing to Elude, and since they consider a felony violation reason to chase by running they have witnessed you committing a felony.

That's a myth I would think. Besides, you can't out run radio and helicopters.

That's a total myth.

How do you figure officers end up making major arrests? They make a stop for a minor traffic violation and the contact blossoms into something bigger as the officer gets more information and makes more observations.

Someone who runs is definitely someone who is going to attract the attention of law enforcement. Plus the very act of running is an additional criminal act.
