When police are doing a running commentary, while chasing a car do they.....?

say, left, left, left or right, right right ,instead of just once?

It makes it clearer what you are trying to convey.

Where I work we also say 'yes yes' in response to a question in the affirmative as it makes it clear to the person listening.

to clarify.

Because the commentary is going out across the radio channel to other units, and so saying it more then once is confirmation in case the first was missed either through noise (sirens are loud), break in transmission (crap radio signal) or similar reason, so all units know exactly what is happening.

echo
To clarify which way they are going so any support knows where the unit is going.

Yes its so that the communication is understood, and that the control room can understand where they are going. And it is easier to understand on a radio

Comming for a radio controller i think it is correct in them saying it 3 times.

As everyone else has answered...... it is to make it perfectly clear to everyone listening what direction the vehicle being pursued is taking.

You would follow the left, left, left up with a road name, i.e
"Left, left, left, onto High Street"

A commentary during a pursuit is vital, not only to the other resources listening but also the Force Incident Manager, who has the authority to halt the pursuit should they deem it too dangerous to continue. The driver of the pursuing vehicle also has the responsibility of halting the pursuit should they deem it too dangerous.

Other pieces of info that need passing are details of offending vehicle, reason for failing to stop (if known), speed of offending vehicle, road conditions, weather conditions, traffic conditions, pedestrian activity, any manouevres made, risk element (low / medium / high), road names, direction of travel, etc

What I have found is that you settle into a commentary after the first few seconds or so. A calm controlled voice gives the FIM confidence that the officers on the ground know what they are doing.

UK police use the triple wording on directions as you say, they also use the phonetic alphabet i.e Alfa Bravo, Charlie, this is standard radio procedure for all UK policing/security services

Radio procedure....you might miss it if said once(if there is interfarence)...but twice....you don`t

noitall Yorkshire England (U.K.)
So it is not as easy to miss hear.

mafiaboss_nz
As everyone has said it is to make sure the direction or statement is received clearly

The answers that say "north", "south", etc make me laugh.

Do you think police officers carry compasses with them??

Of course they say "left" and "right", not "north" or "south"!!!!

And to answer your question, they say it several times for clarity.

Shane P
your question is not clear, however, we say things several time so everyone involved from the radio, dispatch, other officers, other assisting agency's, and the helicopter pilot can understand us and everyone is clear on what is really going on... things really happen fast during a chase and other active situations, WE have to BE VERY CLEAR, or people like you run the risk of getting injured... we avoid that at all costs through training and tactics....

Malcolm Equis
I missed what you were asking somewhere in there...You'll probably need to rephrase the question in the Additional Details section for people to understand, or me at least.

But if my guess is correct, you are asking why they repeat the words instead of just saying it one time?

If so, my guess would be its just the adrenaline. It pumps up their energy; and as a side effect of the adrenaline dump they can get excited and repeat things for no apparent reason.

That or they want to make sure that the people who need to know the location of the suspect vehicle do definitely hear it. So they repeat it to make sure its heard.

If they have another cop riding shot gun the shot gun calls the turns, and they are NEWS
North-East-West-South. If they are riding solo, then he gives the directions.

they dont say left or right, they use compass directions (north., south, etc)
