A Missing/Unidentified Report is made (NYPD) - Pictures of the person are taken for field information investigation - unless it is a child - then a sketch of the child as if he/she were alive are made.
An autopsy is completed and filed. The body will usually lay at the morgue for a month+ if apparent homicide, longer - then off to Potters Field for a burial with a number. |

The state would pay for a burial, and the grave would likely be listed under a reference number of some sort. |
