When you're driving do you make it a point to follow the speed limit or a few miles above?
|
When you're on a 2 lane or 4 lane road and the speed limits 40 or 45 do you intentionally keep at the speed limit or do you drive as fast as you feel is comfortably safe? I myself could care less what the speed limit is and will drive as fast as I want without necessarily weaving in or out of traffic.
Is anyone else like me in that way? I ahven't gotten a ticket in a long time and if I do so be it. I'd pay a couple hundred bucks EVERY year to go as fast as I want.
weeder Additional Details For exemple, if you're going down a steep hill with nobody in front of you do you go as fast as you feel safe driving 55, 60, 65+ or do you intentionally hit the brakes to stay the limit.

I drive the speed that traffic is flowing if there is any. If alone, I usually keep within 5 miles/hour of the limit unless I am late to get somewhere then all limits are off.
For thrills on the road, I ride my Harley. It gets up to the legal speed MUCH faster than my truck |

Just paying a fine every year would be great. But I stay within limits in my own vehicle because I drive commercially. I have to have a perfect driving record to keep my volunteer job. One ticket and I lose the job I love so much. |

It's a "feel" thing. The more comfortable you are with the car you're driving, and the more familiar you are with the road you're traveling, should dictate your rate of speed. Other considerations are whether or not you are impaired, or have prior arrests or multiple traffic violations outstanding. These issues would tend to make you slow down and abide by the law. SHOULD, I say. |

It's an interesting question. There a many different schools of thought on speed. There is that 85th percentile thing that seems reasonable. My philosophy is that all that matters is what the law is and what the sign states. It really isn't hard to just go the speed limit. For the most part I find they are pretty reasonable. Now, when you do, you are going to be the ONLY one doing it...its very frustrating. Even if the traffic around you is speeding you are still breaking the law if you join them. It is quite a conundrum. I don't understand how so many people can feel so comfortable speeding.
I hate how if you go the limit everyone passes you and you get up to the light or stop sign and what do you know, there they are creating more congestion that YOU, the law follower has to wait for. It is so unfair. THEY should be the ones waiting for YOU since by law they should have remained BEHIND you.
I get the feeling sometimes of "WHY am I the only person on the planet that obeys the speed limits. If every other person (including cops) is going to ignore the sign, why should I obey it? Am I crazy? what is wrong with the world?
It's quite a conundrum.
One thing to keep in mind is that kinetic energy (the force that your car hits at if you hit something) goes by the SQUARE of your velocity. Your braking distance increases by the SQUARE of your speed. Is it really worth it to get somewhere a few minutes or second faster? Wouldn't you feel better knowing that you got where you are going without hurting or possibly hurting anyone or anything else and not offending anyone?
When it comes to the law I really feel that you are damned if you do and damned if you don't. If you break it, you have the city/state/county upset with you, if you don't exceed it you have everyone else mad at you. It's quite vexing. I wish society would make up it's mind. Which is it? have laws and obey them, or just not have them and do what you want?
How come no cops are responding to this? Lets hear it cops.
Who gave me a thumbdown? What could possibly be wrong with my answer? Like I said...damned if you do, damned if you don't. |

I usely drive about 10 miles over the posted speed unless I am in I75, I475, or I285. On those it is as fast as I feel I can get a way with. |

I usually try to stay around the speed limit or maybe a few miles over. I travel w/my daughter alot so I don't like to drive fast w/her in the car. I could careless if anyone honks their horn at me. If they have a problem w/it they can go around me because I am not going to put my daughter or myself in danger!!! |

Not in residential areas or anything. But on main road, or a highway, yeah - I basically drive what I feel safe driving. Unless there's a cop behind me. |

Speed! as long as I am not tailgating or weaving, I will always like to go a little faster than the law permits |

In traffic, I generally drive the speed of the traffic around me.
On the highway, when I'm traveling and not in traffic, I set the cruise control for 9 miles / hour over the limit. |

i do what feels right at the time. usually i try to stay at the speed limit, maybe 5 mph above if the speed limit is like 65.
if i am in a residential area, i usually keep it to at the speed limit, just because i know how neglegent parents like to let their kids run out in front of traffic around here and i would hate to be reponsible for a kid's death. not because i like kids or anything..i just hate court. |

I'm with you Weeder, I speed (safely) all the time. I slow down in School zones because I wouldn't be able to forgive myself if a kid ran out in the road and I couldn't stop in time. |

When driving, I follow the speed limit (a little under in bad weather or low visibility times) because I just want to get where I'm going safely, without hassles. I simply choose to 'stand on principles' in other aspects of my life. |
