Is it considered not wearing a seatbelt at all? But you are wearing it, but just like a lap belt?

In Ontario, that is called "fail to wear complete seat belt assembly" and is a $110 fine and 3 points. |

Legal or not it's a VERY bad idea. If you get in a crash, the belt will transfer the forces to your ribcage which cannot withstand the forces. Your rib(s) WILL break and you WILL puncture a lung (probably die), or tear your aorta (certainly die) in even a minor frontal collision.
The belt is designed to transfer the force to across your sternum and your collarbone/shoulder which are stronger and better able to withstand the forces involved. Plus, if your collarbone breaks you won't send shards of bone into your lungs, heart, major arteries/veins, etc.
You're probably better off not wearing a belt at all than wearing it improperly. |

whether it's legal or not, it's a good way to break some ribs in a crash.
so, is the law really that important, or your condition after a crash? |
|

It's Whatever

Illegal. If the police catch you. |

Illegal. Seatbelt has to be worn properly. (I know, I've gotten a ticket for doing just that). |

Illegal. You must be wearing the seat belt correctly with the shoulder harness in place. |

Legal or not - it's stupid. |

It's illegal. Seat belts must be worn as intended by the manufacturer. Not only is it illegal, it's dangerous because your body will be twisted by the crash forces. At the very least, you're looking at some cracked ribs. Your spine can also be snapped, your ribs broken and slammed like spears through your heart, lungs, or aorta. Wear it the right way. |

Illegal, seatbelts must be worn "properly" while operating a motor vehicle. If a person is going to where it that way they would be better off not wearing one. |

When you are driving a car which came from the factory with seat belts - they must be worn in the way they were intended.
Properly wearing the seat belt, over the shoulder, is for your protection in an accident. Wearing it under your arm will NOT protect you in an accident and it is illegal.
If your vehicle is much older and came from the factory with the lap belt only - then you are legal. No one can force you to change it to over the shoulder because it came from the factory that way.
A friend of mine did some research and fought a 'seat belt' ticket and won. His truck came from the factory with only the lap belt - the over the shoulder had not been produced yet.
The law states; as long as you are wearing a seat belt properly then you are legal (no matter if it's a lap belt or over the shoulder). I'm sure the police officer was not pleased to learn this........................ |

Probably depends on the state. In New Hampshire your home free they don't have a seat belt law.
In North Carolina (the state I work in) it is illegal to wear your seat belt like that. The statute reads "without having the provided seat belt properly fastened about the defendant's body." The key word being "properly."
Its also a good idea to wear it like it was intended. It could save your life. |

I think its illegal. If you crash, it can injur your underarm, and cause some damage. I'm not too sure though. |

um... I have no idea what the laws are where you are driving, but here thats NOT legal.
I have no idea why you aren't wearing it though. It is there for your safety and not anyone else. |
