When you get pulled over by a cop, is it better too...?
|
When you get pulled over by a cop (for say speeding) and they come up to your window and do the notorious "Did you know that you were going 15 miles above the speed limit?" Is it better to lie and say something like "No officer, I really didnt notice, Im really sorry!" or tell the truth and say something like "Yes, I did, I am really sorry- I am in a hurry, I know I should've been going the speed limit".
Because in a way it seems better to lie so you dont look as foolish (even though the cop probably knows your lieing). But it also seems logical to tell the truth (because the cop would be shocked you are actually truthful and admire you and let you off)
In your opinion whats better?

I'm in law enforcement.
We have some level discretion in our decisions, but we also have good antennae about people and know when we're being lied to - people give us signals that are very easy to read. It's a clear insult to our intelligence when you lie.
So, if I'm making the decision, I'll always lean to a little leniency when someone is sincere and apologetic, with some humility. It's a people business..... |

Honesty is the best policy. Most of the police have heard every excuse possible and will know you're lying anyways. |

IT ALL DEPENDS ON THE COP
if people are honest with me and fess up, i normally let them off with a verbal warning, as long as they werent too far over the limit or doing somehting dangerous.
But there are some people who will give yu a ticket no matter what.
In the end they either have the evidence or they dont, and they have discretion to deal with it or not.
If you say you didnt realise all you are telling the officer is that you were driving without due care and attention
(as it's set very clearly under the road traffic act that speed is drivers respoinsibility and driving above the designated limit constitutes fault on the part of the driver)
my advise is just say sorry. |

fess up and its a good idea for the first words out of you mouth to be "hello officer how are you?" |

Own up to it.
Maybe, just maybe, if you show some courtesy and realize you were wrong, he just might let you off with a warning. |

Never admit to doing something illegal to a cop or judge. So, when asked if you knew, say, "No, I was not aware of that." |

The Officer is pulling you over because you committed a violation, and his intentions are to give you a citation, otherwise he wouldn't have stopped you. Now, attitude means everything. Right now, your odds are 50/50. If you start to BS him, the odds change, if you cop an attitude, you lose!. A little bit of advice. Never say, you didn't realize you were driving so fast, or you didn't see the red light, or stop sign. That just tells the Officer that you are a menace, and shouldn't be driving. |

Don't admit to it, even if you did know. I agree. Just because it makes you look arrogant like you don't respect the law. Maybe you don't respect the law. Maybe you just, spaced it and went over the limit. Anyway, don't admit to anything just because you may want to contest something later and then you'll have put your foot in your mouth too soon. |

My uncle is a cop. .i don't think it really matters. Most of them already have planned out what they are going to do right when they turn on their lights. I'd say it probably depends on how much over the speed limit you were going. That's probably the deciding factor for most of them.
As long as you are polite to them and don't disrespect them. .they will probably won't care no matter if you do lie or if you do tell the truth. |

I say, never admit knowing you were speeding. You will probably get a ticket anyway, unless the officer is in a good mood that day. There are people who speed all the time, not caring what the speed limit is. Then there are people who have things on their minds and aren't paying attention to how fast they are going. But never admit to doing it on purpose. |

The very worst thing you could do is to insult the cops intelligence by lieing to him. |

tell the truth and be respectfull the way you act towards the officer will dictate whether or not you leave without a ticket, with a ticket, without your car, or in handcuffs. If you are beligerent then you deserve a ticket but if you admit you did speed then you will more than likely leave with a warning |

Keep in mind that whatever you say will be written down on the back of the ticket in the notes section. Kind of hard to fight the ticket in court later if you've already admitted guilt to the officer on scene. If fighting the ticket isn't an issue, I would go for the truth, there is a better chance the officer will reduce the ticket on the spot. If you lie about it, the officer will give a full ticket expecting you to fight it in court and have it reduced there.
All in all, not speeding is less confusing! lol |

Lie. If you are an attractive woman it is also best to cry and make up a story. I have a friend who always gets out of tickets because she can cry on demand and makes up a story of a BF dumping her and she wants to die. And they always let her go. I know if i did it the cop would give me a ticket anyway and probably a lecture too because I am not as cute as her. |
