I was married to a girl who knew the law back to front and she abused it with the police knowing it. She belted me, and I was locked up after I called the police when she brang her cousins over to join in. Went to court, and with all my witnesses it kept getting ajourned. This all happend because I wantd to leave her. In the end, after she smashed my house up, smashed one of my cars into the other, she got a restraining order on me, and I could not even return back to my house that I paid for, she said she was living there when she was not. The whole legal system, and majority of Police, are a joke!! Yes thats right, they make every white aussie male a criminal, until proven inocent. I ended up getting off all my charges, after the thousands spent in legals. BUT, what did she get??? Nothing......I even had to pay her out to get her out of my house. She took the furniture, spread broken glass, and pins and needles over the carpet, when she left. She had links to terrorists back home in her Dump hole, Her police prossocutor had even written that she is a lyer on her file, and it still went through months of court. I am writing a life story as we speak, and it will include everything with out exageration, raw and truthfull. |

Police interact with the public several million of times a day in this country.
You are going to have to be a tad bit more specific.
Your question is way to broad for any serious answer, as every interaction is different and every person involved has a different opinion.
Your opinion may be they made it worse, esp if you where arrested or issued a ticket, while the other person may think it was great, since you did get arrested.
Making general statements about any group, without specific facts and a specific situation is really pointless and uneducated on the part of those that do it.
problems are usually made "worse" for those that deserve it. The police are not your baby sitters and like another poster said, they can't fix in 15 minutes what took years to build up. There sole job is to keep the peace and enforce the laws. Yes, we solve problems, but quickly and efficiently. Its not Judge Judy. Often times solving the problem is by taking someone to jail and removing them from the equation. We get seen as the "bad guys" but our job is done.
Bottom line, if you do not want the Police to solve your problem, don't call them or do things to get them involved.
Once I show up, I make the decesions on how a situation will be resolved. You have given up that right by involving me. I will do what I need to do to protect myself first, the public, the participants and the peace. Not everyone will like the results.

Depends on the problem obviously.
Sometimes I've seen minor neighbour disputes escalate because one of them called the police and then they decided to retaliate.
However, the lady who had her window smashed and her belongings stolen was very happy to get the stuff back after I located and arrested the bad guy.
Sometimes people get frustrated because sometimes they expect us to solve their problem in 15 minutes when it took them 15 years to get to the point they are at.
Some folks are also suprised that we are limited in the things we can do.
ie. no, I can't make your 16yr old go to school or clean his/her room,
no, I can't make your husband to to drug rehab against his will,
no, I can't make your wife leave the house because you have decided to divorce her and want her out,
no, I can't go to your friend's house and insist that he pay you back the money he owes you.
no, simply telling me that you suspect the guy down the street is a drug dealer is not enough for me to go over there and arrest him. |

I think they try to do their best with whatever the situation is. Why would they want to make it worse? If people don't want their help then they shouldn't call the police. |

They do what they can, The police are not there to solve problems, they enforce the law, many of the problems they are called to handle are made worse by the people involved, not the cops. A cop cannot stop somebody from getting back to gather with a abusive partner, stop a druggie from using again or make neighbors "be nice" to each other forever. They can arrest an abuser and provide information on seeking help to the victim, keep the peace and make it hard for a dealer to sell his wares, but people need to take responsibility for changing things in their own lives and not expect government to do it for them. |

Depends on the situation. Robbery and catch the criminal make it better. Often times though in a domestic dispute they can make it worse. |

Depends the sitution. Say it's robbery, breaking in n' out they will make it better. Otherwise say, it's something that's not really an emergency, they will make it worse. |

In the US and EU they definately try to solve.
But in some developing countries it is the later. Law enforcement people are the law breakers here. |

when the police come to your home the light on the squadron car as a general rule stay on.So the neighbors will know something is happening. But if its life threatening and they save your life then i think they have solved your problem but if your husband or wife is beating you you ll just get busted upside the head for calling them. |

Although in the case of domestic violence they may appear to make the situation worse if the victim does what they should do, ie restraining order, shelters, ect. it will help. part of the reason for special laws reguarding domestic violece is to give the victim a chance to escape a bad situation. Other incidents can be reported anonomously to protect you from retaliation.
One consideration is wether or not you can deal with this yourself simply by knocking on your neighbors door and asking them to turn the volume down, move their car, stop blowing pot smoke into your ac unit, or whatever you see more as an annoyance than a threat. doing this would help many neighborhood disputes from occuring as 90% of the time people don't realize they are and never intended to cause a problem. Just be respectful and polite.
If a serious crime is being, has been, or is about to be committed calling the cops is the only thing you can realistically or leagally do aside from self defence. if someone breaks into your house though get your gun before you get your phone, It is unlikely the cops are already at your driveway. |

In the big picture, they generally make it worse, because they are actually serving their own turf-building agenda, notwithstanding dressed up in "defend and serve" fluff. |

I do everything I can to avoid the police. In my opinion, if you call the police they usually make the problem worse.
Good question. |

Depends on what kind of problem it is. I once called because my husband was beating me and threatened to kill me with a shotgun. It was about 3 in the morning and the police said to me "well, since you are married to him, i can't do anything about it". |
