I heard if you smoke or smoked bud so many times you can't be a cop. I want to be a ballistics examiner but don't want to waste my time taking classes to find out I can't do anything with my degree because I used to be a pot head in my younger years. Plus, I do not want to go through police academy either.

In most crime labs in the US you do not have to be a cop to be a tech. All do test for drug use, they are usually state, county or municipal jobs. In most cases you are looking to be a firearms examiner. If you want to do on scene ballistics work that would be part of the crime scene processing team. You need to have a broader scope then a firearms examiners does. Firearms is very specialized.

Simply using the termanology that you used in the question will get you rejected.
In any law enforcement job, commissioned officer or not, there has to be a level of honesty, personal control, knowledge, integrity and other qualities.
If you have a history of drug abuse, including 'buds', it will be reason for rejection.
FYI, 99% of all lab personnel, including ballistics, are not commissioned officers. They just collect and/or analyze the evidence.
To become a 'ballistics expert' will take many, many years of training and education and on the job experience.
And I must disagree with 'littlebilly' above. A background investigation and a polygraph exam will uncover any prior drug usage. You could lie, but you'll be found out. |

may not be a good idea to bring it up in an interview but no, smoking weed in the past won't stop you from being a cop, if you have a criminal record that might change things
it's not like they can tell anyway, it only stays in your system for a couple of weeks
edit, sorry but I had to add this after what Texas Star posted, they aren't going to put you through a lie detector test, you're joining the police not the secret service, polygraphs are notoriusly inaccurate anyway
a background investigation will only uncover charges relating to drug offenses, as long as you have a clean criminal record you'll be fine |
