They don't carry firearms on them if they are smart, the police often stop such known organised crime suspects and thoroughly search them. However they will no doubt have those who carry guns for them and they will have easy acess to guns if the need should arise.

This type of assassination makes it very difficult for investigating police officers to gather the proof needed to take a case to trial due to lack of positive ID and a lack of forensics and DNA evidence.
