Probably either the Smith & Wesson model 1917 or the Colt New Service. They would have been WWI and WWII surplus guns supplied by either the British or America. Colt stopped making the New Service in 1946, but S&W continued with their 1917 model until 1954.

I cannot believe any Australian police unit would be using anything as American as a .45. The Canadian NW Mounted Police used the Colt New Service revolver in .45 colt during the '30's-'50's. The New South Wales police use the Glock 22 in .40 S&W now, and prior to that used S&W .38 revolvers. I cannot find info on what they used before that. Most Commonwealth police copied British usage, and never used large bore guns in the old days. They may have used some surplus military guns during the war years, but I cannot dig up data for that period. Uniforms & officers Yes; firearms No. |
