Anything that can be taken from you & used against you is not good. That includes pepper spray, a knife or a gun.
Learn a martial art, it cannot be taken from you & you may surprise someone long enough to get away. |

Does your institution allow you to carry any weapon while on the property? That would be the first question I would ask. |

Get a cop to show you a few joint munipulation techniques. I taught my daughter and wife just enough to avoid being grabbed or choked and it's very simple. If you opt for the spray get something from ASP. they have the best delivery system ive ever seen. |

In my experience "joint manipulation" also know as joint locks are effective but not as effictive as on some as others. I have noticed that mentally challenged people arent as effected by pain as you or I are. So taking that into account joint locks effectiveness is diminshed even more. Krav Maga which is an Israli self defense is a very good and easy to learn way of protecting yourself. Pepperspray like was mentioned by others can be fatal due to its contents. Tasers can kill a person just a fast as a bullet. A friction lock baton also know as an ASP because of its manufacturer are good self defense weapons they will allow you to keep some distance between you and the attacker. But like was mentioned by others here anything you can put your hand on they can put their hand on it to. On to the big thing now. Handguns are very effective but I do not recommend one for your situation. |

The pepper spray, but not the crap you get at walmart, go to a police supply store and get the real deal. BUT understand this, there are NO silver bullets so to speak. Some people are not affected by O.C. and some will slam to the ground like they were hit by a truck. It can also be deadly {some peoples throats will constrict to the point of no O2 flow and be fatal} so be carefull. A good self defense class and I don't mean karate etc., I mean a PPC class makes a world of difference. Our PPC or hand to hand training officer also teaches karate but they are totally different courses. Go talk to your sheriffs or police department and find out who trains their officers and take a course. Of course that means you have to practice allot afterword to retain what you learn so grab your significant other as a training buddy and toss em' around a bit. |

Find a new profession as it seems you have lost faith in the one you are currently in. First rule of care of patients is "do no harm". Sounds like you wish to do harm wether it be self defense or not it is still harm. If the employer is putting you in this situation then get out of it, quit or move on. Its not good to be in a job that you feel threatened in. If you choose to stay, then you will have to understand the concept of reasonable force. That means you will have to risk the *** whoopens that sometimes happen to those attempting to do good. |

Use the legal choice.. uh not bear spray.. unless ur protecting urself from a bear.. if u spray someone with bear spray.. even if they were attacking you.. u can be sued.. and whats worse.. theyd win.
OH. and a taser works better.. if they are legal in ur state..NOT a stun gun.. but a real TASER. |

I always recommend the Smith & Wesson .38 special for ladies, but personally prefer the .357 magnum.
I would think a personal alarm would be sufficient to handle patients. |

pepper spray hurts like a mother if you get in in their eyes. (In self-defense only, of course) |

Sounds to me , Like you should change professions. Self defence classes really doesn't seem like a bad idea ! As far as which mace or spray to use, well if there mentally ill , My question would be will it stop them effectively enough. Personally, I would buy a mini hand held torch. You can pick them up at a hardware store for about 35 bucks. Just pull the trigger and it lights up HOTTTTTTT! You could definitely does some fast controlled damage there !!!!!!! |

Be warned: bear mace can kill humans, it's wicked strong stuff. I would think pepper spray would be sufficient. Personally, I prefer a kimber eclipse 2 .40 caliber. |

FOX OC (oleoresin-capsicum) is some harsh stuff. I had to get sprayed with it to carry it. 5.3 million scovel heat units. Ouch that burned so bad. |

I heard the best protection available was the birth control pill, in combination with a correctly worn condom. :) |
