Which looks worse on your resume, history of quitting a job, or history of getting fired from a job?

Getting fired looks worse. Rememer, it's just better to remain honest. If your current job doesn't fit you, quit. I got fired from a job after refusing to lie to the State Board of Nursing. I decided not to lie about getting fired when I submitted my resume to another healthcare company. I took a deep breath and decided that I stuck with my values and with what was right, and I wasn't going to lie about that or hide it. I was given an interview, and I was open and honest about the situation. I was hired the next day. A few years later, my boss told me that she hired me for my integrity and personal values concerning the situation. She retired and placed me into her position. I have hired several people who displayed that very quality and haven't yet been disappointed.

Just put the beginning and end dates of your employment. don't address the "why" until the interviewer asks. If you have employment issues, it would be a good Idea to type a list of 3 references (no family) to present at the interview on a separate sheet of paper from your resume.

here's the format:
Name or person first and last
relationship to you (former supervisor, friend of family etc.)
years aquainted
an e-mail and telephone they can be reached.

This gives you an air of credibilty that having job gaps may take away.

Getting fired....if your employment was less then 6 months, I wouldn't even mention it.

What employers truely look for is a splotchy job record, meaning multiple jobs over the years. Employers want someone who shows they can stick the same job out for multiple years.

Also...long gaps between employment is a red flag.

both can look bad. If you have a history of quitting a job it shows lack of reliability. If you have a history of being fired it shows lack of responsibility.

Getting fired looks a lot worse. Quiting shows the job may have been bad getting fired usually means you were a bad employee. Layoffs are another story.

Quitting looks better, unless your prospective employer asks, "So why did you leave your last job?"

Your answer, "It was something my boss said."

"What was that?"

"Your fired!"

(seen this joke somewhere) But seriously, quitting looks better - quitting with substantial notice (2 wks or more) looks even better.
