That depends on the department. On some departments, it is a lateral transfer and the pay is the same. on most departments, a detective gets paid more. I don't know of any departments where a detective gets paid less than patrol.

Detective. You work patrol for a few years, then can apply and get tested when detective positions open up.....in my city.

The higher salary is the officer who has been an officer longer. A detective is just an assignment to a special unit, not a promotion, therefore no extra pay.
