The British Army, an entirely professional organisation, is not responsible for the nation's discipline.
National Service of any kind will not cure the problem.
The cure for the problem is very simple and it is to teach kids all about citizenship and pride in their community from day one aged 5 at school.
Anything short of the above results in the lack of respect for the place where a child lives resulting in graffiti and litter and the usual damage to life limb and property.
I was born in 1941 and from day one at School aged 5 in 1946 I taught how to tell the time, read and write my own name and started to learn to read a bit better than I had before.
School children then were taught respect for adults, respect for the community and respect for old enemies [the Huns] and to say thanks to the Yanks for everything else. |

The army wouldn't want them.
Bring back the old style Approved schools and Borstals run by ex army personnel where everything is done in double time or you get the water hose and wet knotted towel punishment. Up at 6 a.m and lights out at 9 p.m with one visit a month from parents would soon knock the nonsense out of the unrully kids. |

Why should the army have to deal with street corner thugs? Such people would be useless to the people in the services.
They need to be locked up for that time on bread and water. Then when they were about to be released told the next time you offend you're here for a year. |

It might suit the thugs but I don't think the Army would be happy about becoming a baby sitting service for mindless morons |

The Govmnt should form an ASBO and prison Electricity company. Use all the scum of this country to power our homes!! get them on tread mills and bikes to generate electricity, never mind sending them off on an all inclusive holiday to Antigua or teaching them how to pick locks/ get around the law"properly". Give them nothing but PAIN!!!!! |

The lack of discipline is a driving factor to commit a crime. Discipline is what makes you get a job, instead of stealing from someone else.
Of course, there would have to be ground rules. You woudn't want to teach these people combat, nor let them into a classified or sensitive area. You could wind up with a more dangerous criminal on the street when you are done. The offenders would have to be screened first to see if they are a higher risk to offend again.
I'm not sure 6 months is enough to undo 18 years of poor parental supervision.
I would love to see this for non violent first time offenders |

What have the army done to deserve them? Do you think our dedicated soldiers want to be lumbered with a load of lazy workshy thugs? Normally, people who don't want to work and are crap at their jobs get the sack, and for good reason - because they're no use and everybody else has to carry them. Bad enough if you work in a supermarket - pretty disastrous in a war zone. And whose places would they be taking up - possibly those of enthusiastic young people who WANT to be in the army? How ridiculous. |

Back in the late 60's and early 70's some people that were going to be convicted of crimes were given the option of joining the military. I have two friends who went to Vietnam instead of going to jail. I would have to say, that it is a good idea, depending on their crime. You don't want to have a murderer or rapist or someone convicted of a violent crime loose, but a DUI, some theft cases, small amounts of drug cases, and the government could garnish part of their wages to pay fines or restitution and allotment for supporting their families instead of them being on welfare. |

No. The Army/Royal Navy/Air Force does not want the dregs and scum of this country.
Our Armed Forces do us proud.
They do not want to mother this scum....
Jail the feckers and give them hard labour until they learn respect.
I was young once and never disrespected my elders. I had good parents. And I served my country. |

I understand your thoughts and tend to agree. However, the Army has no need of these undisciplined people unless they can be brought to a 'state of grace' in their behaviour.
If a regime were to be set up along the lines of National Service of the 1950-1960 period, I suspect many of these currently undisciplined types would benefit and possibly enjoy their transformation to useful citizens. I knew many who have been turned to become a benefit to society.
Unfortunately, modern life-styles tend to make us feel that we are entitled to respect. What most fail to understand is that true respect has to be earned and, unless it is earned, it has no validity. |

well what if they're just playing music loud do they really deserve to go in the army and in the end up it could be one of your family members dying instead of being put on a asbo |

I totally agree with you on this, and i posted a similar answer yesterday to another question. then i was talking to my wife about this last night and she came up with the point that there are to many do gooders in this country who would not let this happen because it would be wrong to send them out to Iraq or Afghanistan, and it is better to send out the non-trouble makers instead, who have never been in trouble in their lives. |
