Who thinks the US prison system is too comfortable for prisoners.?

In my country, no one wants to associate with a family whose member has been to prison.
Crimes are so rampant in the US & people don't just give a damn going to jail - its like second home to most.
Could it be because prisoners have access to too much comfort?

I agree completely. Why should I work my butt off for what little I have when I can commit a crime against society and get three square meals, a roof over my head, an education, computers, weight training, counseling, etc. It's sickening! No wonder crime is so rampant - who wouldn't want all that!! And if you're sentenced to death, all that means is that you're guaranteed this for at least 20 years. The minute you're sentenced to death, you should go right to the chamber! None of us taxpayers supporting you for the next 20 years or until they can fill the syringe! |

I worry about the problems caused by the repeat offenders who get in great shape while in prison, and are able to physically fight off police once they are out.
Any prisoner with regular television, and too many creature comforts is getting too good a deal, even though they are without freedom.
In america, if you are a prisoner, you can the become a famous comedian (Tim Allen), radio talk show host (G. Gordon Liddy), or Mayor of Washington, DC!
We have lost the concept of shame in this country. |

Prison should be a 6x6 cell with a cot and toilet. No contact with others, no TV, no game time and no yard time. Yeah I'm in the middle ages. Yeah it is punishment not rehabilitation. But anyone who thinks rehabilitation is what happens in U.S. prisons is deluding themselves.
Further, rapists, child molesters and 1st degree murderers(and by this I mean any intentional murder, planned or spur-of-the-moment) should DIE.
This will not deter criminals you say? I say that at least those put to death will not continue to do these things and will no longer strain our resources. |

WAY TOO COMFORTABLE!!! It's supposed to be punishment. Now days they can smoke eat pizza, drink soda whatever. They have entirely too many privileges!!! |

From what they say on TV yes its too comfortable for prisoner's. Especially since they give them chances of letting them out for parolle. I'm tired of it being like a 2nd home for them and then they complain on tv new's that the food's not good enough, and i'm thinking well then get out of their and get your life together and straighten up!
I wish the Prison's Would Do something about that so they would want to come back to Prision its just rediculous. Even though they may get bored or get to play cards, basketball, that's just like being at home. Most everybody in the USA has those things or can get to those things. The Prison's need to make it so they have No TV's, No Games, No Basketball. Just Exercise, A new tool to learn so they can get on the right track when they get out of prison. And then they wonder why they get back into prison later on in life. If they get out of prison later on. |

definitely not. it is not comfortable at all, it is very dangerous. and there are misconceptions... in many prisons, they are not allowed to smoke. also, they have to work without real compensation, often for private corporations, who have taken it upon themselves to build facilities to relieve the overpopulated prisons in exchange for the cheap labor.
If this sounds too much like the outside world, that's because people already have to work full time for corporations and receive enough money for little more than a TV and their pizza and soda and a place to live. People need to be rewarded better for their jobs, so there will be a difference between the outside world and prison. People prefer to be outside committing crimes than in prison, that's why they die in police chases... and to them, having a job that pays next to nothing is exactly the same. |

They definitly have 3 hots and a cot, but I wouldn't quite call it comfort! Watch some of the documentaries on them. |

It is not very comfortable as you think it is. Although you can watch tv, play cards, smoke, and play video games, but it is like hell. Prisoners are stuck in one cell all the time. There is no freedom or privacy. The only food is bread and water. |

I think so. They are there to be punished. Bread and water baby. No TV. |

Its probably better that Haiti's jails but rampant AIDS, staphylococcus infections, gang and racial violence, rape, stabbings, intimidation, lousy food, poor sanitation, overcrowding would not strike me as being comfortable. |

Too much comfort? You try being stuck in the same cell, day after day, with nothing to do except a brief exercise period, with the same low-quality food to eat, day after day. No, we need to make our jails more comfortable, not less. We also need to spend more on welfare to tackle the root causes of crime. |
