i got a call from a friend who told me my close friend got caught with a gun by the cops but it was empty and he was just playing around with it. in how much trouble is this guy. btw he is 19?

If he was caught with it, what was he doing with it at the time? How did they know he had it, did he point it at someone "playing around", does the state he lives in have strict laws on firearms, a gun doesn't tell me much, was it a pistol? a shotgun? Because in most states over 18 you can have a shotgun or rifle, but not a pistol, must be 21. All this has to be taken into consideration when you ask how much trouble he's in. In Louisiana it would probably be a fine, in New York eight months in jail. |

It would depend on several factors. The most important would be the exact charge that is filed, the state he is in, and the exact charge he is ultimately convicted of. As you mentioned none of that, no reasonable answer is possible. Every state and country has their own laws, and when several charges are possible each prosecutor decides what to pursue. |

yeah it definitely depends on a lot of things. what state he was in, what kind of gun it was (pistol, rifle, etc), if the gun was registered to him, and so on. if i had to guess i would say that its a class c or d felony so he will be in jail for over a year at the minimum. |
