Why 3 cars?
Find answers to your legal question.

Why 3 cars?

i happened to see an accident. the ambulance arrived and then the police cars?
I can understand 3 police men in one fourseater car, but why 3 policemen in four, four seater cars?
I thought i wa a waste of resources ,as well as petrol

ERM.... How do you get 4 police cars there with only 3 policemen....?

sarah1962
maybe they were not busy that night, also they need to make the road safe, would need more police for that, all the best

Interesting. How could 3 people drive 4 cars?

As others have said, sometimes there just happens to be that many officers in the area. Also, things are often not properly reported.

Some people think it's a good idea to call in an emergency just to get the Police there quicker when there's actually no emergency at all.

Also, sometimes a report of 20 people fighting turns out to be 2 people who were having a fight about 20 minutes ago.

This does happen.

Depends on the level of seriousness. It is the police's job to

Investigate the accident
Arrest any potential offenders at the scene
Protect emergenct workers from passing vehicles
Warn other vehicles from a distance
Divert traffic.

If you're on your own, it is NOT easy doing all of that, especially on a dual carriageway.
With 3 officers available you've got 1 to take details and 2 to direct traffic.

Sometimes a general alert is put out to any police cars which happen to be in the area and more than one responds. Aren't you glad that for once several police officers responded promptly? I don't suppose that the ones who proved surplus to requirements hung about for too long. I think that the waste of petrol is inevitable while we expect the police to patrol our locality. We can't have it all ways.

Your local police aren't always sitting together at the donut shop wolfing down pastries. They are each, in their own vehicles, patrolling different parts of the community or performing other duties, keeping you and your family and friends safe and free from harm.

When a serious accident occurs, it may be necessary for several police officers to come together to investigate the accident, control traffic around the accident scene and to protect the injured parties from further harm. The quickest and most efficient method for them to get to the accident scene is to each drive their own vehicles from wherever they may have been. Thus, you will see more than one police vehicle at the scene.

When the emergency at the accident scene is over, each of the policemen will again go their separate ways to patrol their designated parts of the community.

ok if you have a town or city lets say it's roughly, 40 miles squared, ok so if you have 4 cops in one car and a bad guy is caught what do you do leave one officer behind and take your bad guy to jail? also if you have 40 officers to patrol the same city, and they are all in side 15 cars there are going to take some time to get to issues in stead of having 40 cars, 40 cars can patrol smaller areas and responnd quicker. also when you see 3 or 4 cars show up, one of them is the patrol supervisor, he needs to know everything that happens on his shift, he is the one responsible for his team. the others are there to help direct traffic if it's an accident and to help ask questions and gather information to help speed the process up, otherwise one guy to direct traffic and ask questions and help those that need it would be impossible to do.

I hear you, but my question to you is this. How did 3 policemen drive 4 cars?

Seriously, I notice here in Canada that cops don't show any concern for the environment. They idle their cars all day long if they are in the car. They very rarely give out tickets for littering or other environmentally sensitive issues. They do the same as what you describe all the time here. They don't need to drive cars with big v-8 engines, but they do. Every time I see a new cop car, they have new lights on the roof. Why? Something wrong with the old ones on the last car they trashed. They are civil servants with power and who is going to stop them?

You know what? Don't worry about, cuz it really doesn't matter in the big scheme of things. We're all going to Hell in a hand-basket. Just enjoy the ride.

First I believe your math, a car vs. personnel doesn’t add up, but here goes the answer anyway. Three patrol cars, three or four officers is very little when you compare it to the population of your city. The police have several concerns when responding to the scene of an accident especially in light of the presence of an ambulance thus suggesting one or more injuries to persons involved. The scene itself is a crime scene in essence in that one or more persons violated a traffic and/or criminal offense as a "cause" to the accident itself. Failing to stop, failure to yield, DUI, Narcotics etc. These are concerns that prior to any police responding are unknown and if there are officers available they will err on the side of caution of officer safety and respond as backup to the original officer who was dispatched to the scene. The latter, DUI or other criminal offenses where the subject may become combative, it then does becomes a matter of officer safety. Second, as a matter of public safety, they need to concern themselves with traffic control, prioritizing ingress and egress of other emergency personnel, ambulance, fire etc. as well as existing traffic while ensuring the safety of emergency personnel. "Lookie loos" can cause further accidents or incidents because they're too concerned with the scene of the accident and the awful waste of taxpayers’ money as one smashes into the car in front of them while gazing and pondering ones own bias of the police and the situation they are controlling. With that, once the scene is secure and the officers agree that it can be maintained or secured with possibly one or two officers, one or more will leave. Also, Serious life threatening injuries or fatalities require a "traffic investigator" who specializes in documenting and recording the scene This will add further police support in order to preserve the scene as a crime scene as well. The severity of those issues dictate additional police support as well as the traffic conditions and the roadway upon which the accident occurred where one can expect to see more to assist in those areas as well. Bottom line, when police respond to anything, traffic accidents included, there are too many unknowns and the initial response may seem overwhelming while the bottom line to any situation is twofold concerning officer and public safety. Secure the scene, provide first aid, and call for additional resources if needed, relay information to emergency services and control traffic. Try doing all of that simultaneously by yourself. I suggest you look into programs that are available such as “ride alongs” in your area. It might be more than an eye opening experience.

Ok so..let's see. How bad was the accident?

2 cars to block off traffic each way, and one to help out on scene, gather information...

What's the problem?

Mate, im a police officer and i'll tell you this, none of us like it, and i'll explain to you why we have to do this.

Most police forces now hava policy of 'single-crewing'
where there is only one officer to a car.

This policy is set by management, whi think it increases the visibility of officers, as more officers can be in different places at one time.

However in reality it is a waste of petrol, it increases the danger to officers dealing with violent situations by themselves, before other offciers can arrive.

and yeah it looks bad when you see it.

Normaly a cop has his own car wich he may share with a partner, if such is given. And when an alert goes out, like in the army, The person drives there. They arent going to drive to the acident and say "hey, lets all get in one car because it will save gas" they normaly are patroling when they are nearby, they drive over. They're not gona leave they're car behind.

Todd M
Police Officers don't just sit at the station waiting for a call. They are out patrolling. I'm surprised the ambulance beat the police, but they may have been at another call when the accident happened. As soon as the situation was in hand I would assume that any officers not needed would continue to patrol.

'' GUV ''
well, your not a cop,and you do not know anything about it. try just minding your own business.and you need four cops to drive four cars. and three cops to every car is a bit of a stretcth.

gordon C
I take your point Graham and I agree with you.It is also a pretty neat trick having three policemen driving four cars.( sorry mate couldn't resist. ! )
