Why would the police give them things they ask for when they just hijacked someone?

I'm assuming you're referring to hostage situations. Often times during the commission of a crime, the perpetrator's plans do not always go accordingly. When law enforcement is involved the perpetrator may take hostages out of desperation. Hostage takers usually have a list of demands when they cannot escape. During hostage negotiations law enforcement may use the list of demands as leverage in order to free innocent citizens.
Another situation would include kidnapping, where the kidnappers demand a ransom in lieu of their victim. Sometimes law enforcement may grant their demands in exchange for the kidnapped.
A prime example would be the pirates off the coast of Somalia. These pirates are hijacking ships and subsequently ransoming the crew for monetary treasure. |

Depends on what they ask for, and why something is being hijacked in the first place.
There's usually a balance between wanting to protect innocent lives and not negotiating with terrorists, since you don't want them to learn their tactics work.
In some cases, at least historically, hijackers are trying to simply flee to another country or something, so in those cases it makes sense to let them to a point, especially if it saves innocent lives. In other cases they're looking to do something like load a plane with jet fuel and slam it into the Eiffel Tower, so that's a no-go. |

First of all, rational thought will tell us facts as simple as thinking, "Wouldn't it make sense if someone could PROVE they own this item?"
How would anyone know what to ask for unless someone advertised that the item was lost? Secondly, a thorough description would certainly be in order before I would give anyone a plug nickel. |
