The standards are based on age. As one gets older the standards are relaxed as typical people tend to get heavier and it's the same way in the military.
So a cop that has 15 years of experience is not a good cop because he acquired a spare tire or she has some junk in the trunk? Please, experience, as the rest of us know, is more valuable then a lean mean young buck or squaw 9 out of 10 times.

most police officers aren't doing hard core chases and roughing it... they give out tickets and such. I'm not saying they aren't good, I just think you've been watching one to many cop shows.

As a police officer I am rally disappointed when I see an officer who does not represent the uniform or department well, due to his weight issue! I would take them out of uniform, not allowing them to work extra employment until they lost weight. Our union has made it tough for rules like this to be implemented. The uniformed officers in my command and my undercover guys all look like MMA fighters. In order to get in my division have to be able to pass a physical fitness exam, just to submit an application!!! I agree 100 percent, it looks awful and is unprofessional!

Generally there are no standards that are required to be met after being hired and passing probation. And many agencies have standards that are so lax that it makes them ridiculous.

I know of a case where a suspect ran to his car and drove away because he saw the "fat" officer trying to sneak up on him. The suspect knew he could run away and try to get away before the officer could get to him. The end result was 2 wrecked police cars and one injured officer. So in that instance, the officer's condition created a mind-set in the suspect that he could get away. He didn't and that's why we know why he tried to get away.

Because of the nature of the work it is very difficult to have good eating habits. We're not like firefighters sitting around a station with a kitchen at hand. Many rely on the local diner for what-ever food is available. Not an excuse, just reality.

I recently saw a couple women Police officers who were about 5'2' each. There they were in full uniform with the black gun belt with their guns and other equipment. I can't help but wonder what would happen to them in a physical confrontation with normal sized males.
