Why are Americans allowed to harm home intruders?
Find answers to your legal question.

Why are Americans allowed to harm home intruders?

They have guns and are allowed to SHOOT TO KILL!

Plus I have heard stories of home owners using baseball bats, hammers, knives, fireplace pokers, frying pans and broken glass to HARM intruders; what is the matter with Americans? are they crazy?

Here in the UK you can be fined thousands of £s if an intruder even hurts himself breaking into your home; the UK is more free :)

Dude, if you're going to pretend you're coming from the UK, at least figure out how to post to the UK site, 'k?

because they value their loved ones.

and how is letting people break and entering your house freedom exactly? LOL.#

HA HA I realised you're a troll. Well played.

Nobody has any business breaking into my home, and if they do they are looking for big trouble. If the UK is on the side of criminals that is just twisted and wrong.

The right of self defense is an ancient British legal tradition. But the right to defend property and to bear arms was restricted to the nobility, with the exception of longbows which were occasionally needed to defend the realm. In the colonies, UK citizens were always permitted weapons and used them with impunity on any native who threatened a colonist in the least degree.

In America, one of our first laws was the right of commoners to keep and bear arms. Some of our states still have "stand your ground" laws in which your right to defend yourself and your property is absolute. Some require you to "flee to the farthest corner" to avoid a fight, but if cornered, one always has the right to use deadly force to defend oneself or ones loved ones from a potentially deadly adversary such as an intruder.

An injured intruder always has the right to sue civilly, but a jury is unlikely to award him damages if the homeowner felt he was threatened. It's just the way we roll.

bustersmycat
ya, free to come into my house, attack me, and take my stuff while I am not FREE to respond. Is that basically a good summation of your idea?

It is a rare person that enters a house uninvited that doesn't wish to do something that the owner will not like.

NeoNerd
I don't know what's more depressing - your trolling, or the Americans making comments about 'kicking Britain's ***' in WW2.

NoBaama
Because it is in our nature to defend ourselves. If we had to rely on Europeans to defend us, we would all be speaking German right now.

ornery and mean
So, what you are saying is that the UK is a great place to be ... if you are the type of person that breaks into the homes of others.

Sounds like it's a lousy place to be if you the person that is being broken into. Tell me, after the intruder breaks in ... is the person living in the house required to offer tea?

Bob B
No, they are not allowed to shoot to kill unless the killer is about to shoot them.

In both the US and the UK, you have the right to defend yourself against attack. "Deadly force", however, is only acceptable if the attacker posed a threat to your own life.

imamidnightlover
It is called the Castle Doctrine once the intruder has entered your home you can assume they are there to commit great bodily harm or death and you have the right to use whatever force necessary to protect your family although if alone, you must try to retreat However, you are not required to round up your family before using deadly force.

Stereotypemebecauseyouknow
That sounds like a nice place for Home invaders.

yes. we're free. i go burglaring every day. usually while people are watching tv. its usually so boring that they dont even notice when i take the tv. but if they do notice, they wave me on to do as i please, saying " carry on. we're not allowed to stop you". i love the freedom of this country.

troll alert, but anyway, you are wrong about the uk, if i clobber someone around the head as they try and break into my house that is still self defense in the eyes of the law, the only cases where it has not been self defense is when people are running away from the homes and the person has been chased and attacked, i agree with this but they were still persecuted however still very lightly in comparison to other cases and to all of you people hating on the UK, go **** yourselves,

You don't know how to protect yourself. That's why every time you get into a war, the US has to come rescue you. If you knew how to use guns, we wouldn't have to do that so often.

It's an old custom of defending the homestead. The American violent way.
