The same reasons fire fighters are considered heroes-their jobs require a lot more self sacrifice when stuff hits the fan. |

Some people belive that they are special because they arrest people and issue tickets. |

Who asked anyone to treat us like heroes? Were just people doing a job, that's it. |

If they save a baby from a burning building I'm not sure they're paid to do that... Pulling over speeders is a different story, it all depends on what they've done. |

Life ain't always easy

They may get paid to do it, but they do not get paid enough when you think about the danger they put themselves in sometimes. |

they deserve it...they risk their lives for that small of pay...try it. |

Police officer aren't paid what they are worth. And it takes extraordinary courage and skill to be a good peace officer. So when a "cop" risks his life to save or protect another (let's say you, for example) he is rightfully treated as a hero. |

because we now live in a society that rewards the mundane.
we reward those that do not need it so that those that are in the middle or below do not get discouraged. that you for "no child left behind"
until we EXPECT the best we will have to continue to reward the norm |

They're saving lives. That's what you get when you save lives, gratitude. |

Yeah, and then let them off the hook when they are doing what their not!
I'm so sick of those racial profilers
Drug smugglers
Women beaters
Lawless wonders
They get paid for getting a gun drawn on them, but when they do it to me and my family just for a speeding violation, what do I get grief and a ticket
This badge is your friend. "snickdoogy"
I am sure that gun ain't my friend!
They do so much undercover paranoia sets in and they become bad cops on the wrong people. And then wanna cry out "hero"
plllllllleeeeeease!

They are paid to stop dangerous people from doing dangerous things, with force at times.
No other job except for the military or firman can I think of a job where you put your life on the line to protect the common man every day.
While I hate getting pulled over if Im speeding, I have a ton of respect when you watch cops get shot or worse on TV when stopping criminals. Its horrible.
God Bless them. |

Because the bravery and courage it takes to do their job is so admirable. They deserve every bit of that admiration because they risk their lives every day for us. The same goes for firefighters, soldiers, and many others. |

Because that is what they are..heroes...even when off duty someone needs assitance and they don't get paid for that !
Being a hero is a 24/7 thankless occupation.....Well here is one ... THANKX.....hope they get many more..........bye now..... |

Well, I can tell by the question it was posed by someone who is the type of person who would never begin to comprhend any of the possible answers. Most, police officers are the kind of person who, wthout any expectation of gratuity or thanks, put their own safety and welfare aside so that they might protect your sorry *** and make sure your neighborhood streets are safe at night. Yes, some are very well paid but, how much is a human life worth? In essence, they volunteer to put their lives down, if it so be, so that you can walk hom from the corner store without worry. As a former police officer I can tell you most of them would do the job for free....it is who they are. Additionally, if yours is a common perspective, one might ask the same of our troops at war (former soldier as well). Why are they treated as heroes...they are only doing what they volunteered to do right? Think about it douchebag...it is because of men and women like them that you can even ask such an idiotic question in the first place. Go back to your cashier job at 7-11 and be thankfull that you live in a society where other people are willing to make that sacrifice for others. |

Loving Life Responsibly

My dad is a police. And he is a hero. He doesn't get paid at all for what he does. So, if he saves your life one day, maybe you'll understand why he is a hero - he's not in it for money. If you ask him if he is a hero he denies it. He hates taking credit for what he does. He just risks his life because he knows it's what he needs to do. |

Probably because they go above and beyond what the pay entails. Police officers risk their lives for others safety everyday. The pay they recieve isn't worthy of this, but thank goodness their are dedicated men and women out there who love their jobs enough to continue to serve and protect even when they are harassed, abused, disrespected, and berated on a daily basis by people who whine and complain about getting caught doing things they know are illegal. |

Would you want to be on the phone with the police - someone with a gun breaking into your house - and they say - hmmm, sorry - I'm on my lunch break - call back in about an hour??? |

Your absolutely right....I chose this profession and I couldn't imagine doing anything else. I knew the risks when I started, and so does my family. I do not see police officers being treated like hero's however. We are spat at, cursed at, flipped off and whatever clever little stunt someone thinks they can pull off. I do not think that I'm a hero, but my boys think I am.

Thats like saying why are people at war considered heros when they choose to go. That profession has more risk than most. The foundation of our goverment is to serve and protect. They do things most people cant or would not want to . respect them you will need there help some time in your life. |

Because it's a job that most people do not have the patience/bravery/desire to do. If you were getting shot at, spit at, sworn at, risking your life for folks that are usually ungrateful wouldn't you want to be called a hero as well? |

TURANDOT

AWESOME QUESTION! I have wondered myself.
They build their own shrines and memorials themselves anyway, it is all about ego.
I'd love to see them do all they gripe about for a week, without the excellent pay and generous benefits. That's a true hero!
EDIT: Obviously the job can't be that bad when in spite of it all, they choose to stay. |

Sorry to burst your bubble, but there are not all that many Officers treated as "Hero's" by John Q. Public. Before you run that Pie Hole under your nose, walk a mile in our shoes. |

Because they don't get paid enough to be in it for the money. Most of them do it because they feel the need to help others. It's an underpaid job with above-average risks. That makes them heroes. |

they're not paid to do it. They volunteer.. they risk their life to save people... they're heroes! |
