Why are so many police officers overweight?

Yes, they SHOULD be, however like the majority of Americans they gain weight as they age as well. I know very few people who are the same weight they were when they graduated. Now, combine this with, having to eat fast food, whenever time permits, and usually in a hurry, and sitting for 8-12 hours in a car everyday and it can be difficult to fight the battle of the bulge. Being part of the law enforcement community i can tell you regardless of the joke of officers and donuts, very few actually eat donuts on a regular basis.

Most of you people are morons. After a certain point you realize that all the extra effort you put in to stay in shape and do your job well is not appreciated and not worth it.

Besides all the donut jokes, it is because they spend hours and hours just driving around watching and looking.

They don't get any real lunch breaks, so they eat junk food if and when they can.

I think it's mainly their bullet-proof vests and equipment belt that makes them look overweight.

Personally, with the hours I work on my regular shift, not to mention invests, court time, overtime and stake outs and the fact that I attend college and have a family, it is very difficult to find the time to work out and eat healthy and regularly. I try to work out at least three times a week but it is hard to find the time. Regular meals do not happen often and most of the cops I know go to the donut stores for coffee not donuts. There are overweight people everywhere. I am basically fit and with all he gears we wear it is hard enough to move around comfortably at times let alone run!

well....u have to look at the job conditions..i dont really think its only cops. look at doctors, priests etc...they all fat or majority. they do not have a physicall job to do really...like cops they mainly ride in cruisers, doctors operate and priests sit around n do mass....

Its hard with the shift and hours its not the typical 9-5 and weekends off. In mass we work details, (just stand at a worksite to ensure safety of the public and workers) so my typical work shift is 4 days on and 2 days off and the days off rotate backwards from the previous week. So say, I get a sat/sun off. I go work a detail from 3-7:30($40/hr) on monday then back into work at 11pm that night work till 7am. Go home and back into work at 3pm-11pm. Go home and then up at 7am-3:30pm for another detail. Back into work at 11pm-7am and then home, sleep then back into work at 3pm-11pm. Detail again at 7am-3:30pm(first day off). Then since I am pretty young (22) I will work another detail on my second day off and work a detail from 7-3:30pm on the day of going back in to work to start my 4 days again. So as you can see I am pretty much always working, yes I choose to myself, but the money is excellent. I just got out of the military 2 years ago been on the job for little over a year. I do see myself starting to get a little soft. But I do workout when I can but it just happens. And I have never ate a donut since I got on the job.

THEY SIT IN A CAR AND EAT DONUTS,THA ONLY TIME THAT THEY HAVE TO RUN IS IF IT IS A REAL BIG EMERGENCY THAT THEY CANT DO N THEIR CAR.

I guess is the lack of exercise I doubt that most officer after a long shif go to the gym and work out. Besides most of them are in their car and dont move around a lot....and they eat a lot donouts

Lots of donuts less exercise,the exercises that cops take are:-
Going to the cop car,putting their foot on the pedal and pushing on it, using their hands to turn the car handle and to reach out of the car to take a bag of donuts with sprinkles and chocolate or with sugar.Unless there is any disturbance in their area.Lets face it there is a big difference between past and present police.

most people who become cops are to lazy to work and want a soft job and also something where they can be in authority, as they were not capable of demanding respect, until they got a badge and gun, yet they are better than nothing and you would know it if you have ever lived where there was no law, I do wish they were public servants instead of trying to be dictators or bully's, and some of course want to make this a better place, if only they were not so few, but, the fact they are mostly inherently lazy people is the main reason they are mostly fat,

I want to say all of those donuts, but it's lack of exercises and you can't be a cop unless you have a beer gut or alcohol problem so, it's just my opinion.
