Motoring offences are an easy touch for the fuzz. The majority of motorists are inoffensive, law abiding citizens just going about their business.
Burglars, bank robbers and other such villains, are difficult to deal with. They are usually aggressive and carry guns. |

Come to Grosse Pointe, MI USA. Cops stop you here based on whether or not your car is crappy. Rustbuckets beware! |

I spoke to a traffic police officer and asked him why they were so strict?.
His reply was if you saw and had to deal with the accidents we do you would be the same, better to stop someone for speeding than have to call at their relatives house and inform them of a death.
I think traffic do a half decent job, they mostly only deal with traffic.
It is the Inspectors ands chief inspectors of stations and sub stations who are to blame for not upholding the law properly. |

Point 1. The British Police are considered the world's best police force of that size. Lately they have become enamoured with American tactics which is frankly the highest form of stupidity. However the force has not yet been denigrated beyond recovery.
Point 2. A good police force relies on it's presence in the publics mind primarily, to do it's job. They are unable to police an area completely without losing the public's support. A conversation I had years ago with some police friends put into perspective their tactics. In that doing a huge and difficult job with limited resources, is a bit like smoke and mirrors. You cannot be everywhere, yet you must appear to be just round the corner. The idea of police quota's is real, despite what they say. But it is only to ensure that each division has it's presence felt.
Point 3. Blitzing blackspots, or 'nicking' every lawbreaker on a given day, saves lives on our roads and keeps people thinking about the law. Cars are extremely dangerous. This translates to you getting a ticket once or twice a year, but keeps most people careful all the time. They cannot afford the manpower to do this job as well as they would like.
Point 4. Real crime - without having a police state, hardened and persistant criminals cannot be stopped at source. All the police can do is ensure that the offender is caught. Again saving manpower for the most heinous crimes (violence). This maximises the protection we receive with the manpower available. It also makes the rest of us realise, we will be caught.
Point 5. The police are still people (at least in the UK) and do respond differently to how the are treated by the public. Many good people are well treated, and many a polite criminal receive a lesser punishment. Taking offence at small things tends to put their back up, so be polite and chatty and you might get away with it, or if not will create goodwill if you ever find yourself down the copshop. |

If you are unable to live within the law in this country, then kindly go somewhere else. The police have to spend so much time dealing with mumbling hoodies and intoxicated idiots that they cannot concentrate their efforts on serious crime. |

THE BULB

Did I miss something? Isn't speeding a real crime too?
Time and time again people come on here and want to rant about the police, the police are doing a job, it's nothing to do with being bullied at school or having a big ego. It's just a job. don't take things personally when you get a speeding ticket or other lower level offence penalty, just accept that you took a chance to break the law, and although 9 times out of 10 you get away with it, this time you didn't.
Police are out there solving crimes, catching rapists, murderers and terrrorists, don't forget that.
Do you know how many times a routine stop for traffic offences or bus fare evasion has yielded results?
I'm a police officer and have come across a drug dealer who had a dodgy car tax, a wanted rapist who evaded a bus fare and recently a colleague stopped someone fiddling a parking meter who later turned out to be a murderer!
We're paid to do a job, we do it... simple as that.
Incidently, do you know how many "cold case" murders and rapes are being solved by "low level" offenders providing DNA on arrest?
Should we keep turning a blind eye to these people, just because the public doesn't understand how police work ...WORKS!
I wouldn't tell a mechanic how to fix a car and yet everyone thinks they know about policing. |

You got that so right, it's too much like 'hard work' for the coppers to do a 'proper job'. It's much easier for them to sit in their cars and wait for the unsuspecting motorist , to come along |

The Law is the Law, Each police force has its own departments, I guess you were stopped by traffic officers, and with your attitude I would have given you a ticket rather than warn you about your speed.. REAL Crime ? so when one of your family is killed by a speeding motorist who is drunk, and only doing 4 miles over the limit and they are not caught, YOU will be the first to ask " WHAT WERE THE POLICE DOING ?" we cant win, Yes we do catch burglers, murderers and other offenders the problem then starts with the CPS. Call us to55ers because you got ticketed, we have been called worse and by better people. Merry Christmas. |

I never answer such ridiculous questions as this - however - I am moved to change my habits for you!! On Christmas day, this was what was on your mind?????????
Dear me, you really could have done a better job!! Your example is spurious. You clearly have no idea how police forces work. You speak like those with no knowledge but much misplaced confidence. Go learn a bit. Experience some more. There is criticism to be made BUT YOU DO NOT MAKE IT. |

Its the moronic system where the police want to interfere with everyone to feel important. The training must improve. They should be told its not about them.
But that is the problem when you get people with big egos doing a crap job. Same with traffic wardens and security guards. All think they are really important people. |

The British police are not all to55ers but some definitely are. One really annoying thing they do is wait at the front of a queue of traffic on a green light then just as it changes to red they set off, leaving everyone waiting for ages for the lights to change. I've seen them do this at least 10 times in Bristol. What purpose does it serve other than to pi55 people off! |

On the contrary. The judiciary is at fault in this country, for being so lenient on those convicted. The simple fact is the police do an excellent job, keeping us from anarchy - or would you rather live in Iraq? - but they are too busy dealing with moderate and serious crime to effectively prevent petty crime, which is not being committed by the police! It is the work of malcontents and mis-fits, and the scummy, lippy, useless youth that so much of this generation is.
Why were you doing 4mph over the limit/ Was that going to get you anywhere any quicker? I suppose you'd like them to do nothing until someone drives 5mph over. Then someone else will want 6, or 7, or 8 mph of freedom. Speed limits keep people alive, people like you and I, and all those you hold dear. |

Interesting answers but given the widely differing demands upon the police, who would want their job?
One minte you have to be the hardest so and so and the next be breaking the news of some tragedy to a family |

I Think the British Police are the Best in the World , Considering the Army of Drunks , Drug Adddicts ,Pimps, Muggers , Thieves , Burglers , Murderers , Hoodies and all the S H I T S who are destroying our Country - Don,t forget the Officer on the Beat is Overwhelmed by Mountains of Paperwork , Given their Instructions from "Above" who in turn are controlled by the Faceless Wonders in Government - the Mindless "Do Gooders" and the "Politically Correct" ---- plus the Gun and Knife Culture --which is totally out of control - that puts the Life of every and any Police Officer at Risk ---- I wonder which Catagory you fit into --- stop moaning and take a good look around you , without our Police, Disaster would be Massive ...Total Anarchy ... |

Two friends of mine were in the Gtr. Mcr force and they both said that a new recruit joined up and was doing her job perfectly but because her arrest figures were down they think she was pushed out of the force, this isn't definitely what happened just their opinions and observations. These two friends of mine have highlighted many problems in that force and have not only pointed out that a lot of their colleagues were racist and that lots of them had admitted that they like the control that the uniform gives them over the average Joe. Personally, I feel there is not as much emphasis placed on the notion of serving the public as there is in the USA ( I no there are problems with brutality but this I'm sure is a v.small minority sensationalised by the papers) here it seems they focus more on just arrest arrest arrest and don't take into account that they are providing a service(like a mechanic as mentioned by the policewoman earlier), you might not tell a mechanic how to fix your car but if it was still broke when you came to collect it would you complain? can i be your pet?

true!! too true!!
some kids climbed up on a school shed and hurled bricks at their teacher's house which could be seen from that shed.
they broke windows, put her kids at risk of being hurt and spent a good hour and a half doing it.
the shed was in a school playground. an enclosed area they couldn't have come out of except through the gate. the back of the shed is thankfully impassable.
we called the police the second the first brick hit glass. they said they were coming at 15 and 20 minute intervals and it took them THREE HOURS to get to the house.
i personally ran round and caught four of them in this time. the rest of the group was too large to catch. (their teacher was the mother of a good friend of mine)
it all ended well because they did come and she did get to shout at them and threaten to put social services on them and also tell their mothers. that was cathartic for her, which was good even though my legs were still killing me the next day from all that running.
it is fair to say though, they they are the best police force in the world and other countries regularly hire them to go and solve crimes in their own countries. there is no other police force so honoured and respected by foreign bodies. |
