LOL--another person who has substituted watching film/television for actual experience--if you think a tranquilizer gun would be equally effective and safe for officers to utilize, you aren't even worth attempting to rationally argue with. |

Because the criminals have real guns. If you are facing someone with a real gun, do you want a taser in your hand? |

Yeah, well next time you get robbed and shot and someone uses a lethal weapon on you, maybe you will change your mind. When people stop killing other people with other things like I don't know...GUNS...KNIVES....BOMBS...maybe then we can switch to non-lethal weapons...Until then, you may want to check out of fantasy land, it's not gonna help you down here in the real world where sometimes you gotta fight for your life. |

I'll support cops giving up guns when the criminals do. |

dude why would they
when a dude is shooting at them with a 9mm and all they have is a tranq, the cop is gonna get killed |

because if the criminals find out that the cops are using non lethal weapons then they wont fear the cops as much and crime will go up.... |

You liberals have all the answers, just wish our cops could use rubber bullets on you to show how ineffective they really are, or better yet, get your but out there and fight criminals with the non-lethal weapons and see for your self when some drugged up criminal keeps coming after you after being hit malt-able times. |

I tell you what..... as soon as the criminals switch to 100% non-lethal weapons, then I am sure the police will follow suit and if they don't we can take it to our State Legislators.
I don't know why anyone would want to switch to 100% non-lethal weapons when the bad guys have lethal ones. |

why would somebody not want a gun when everybody else has one? if cops stoped using guns this country would self destruct. cops are already out gunned when they pull thier tiny little 9mm against some gangbanger with an AK-47 and a drum clip |

Because the bad guys shoot to kill. If the good guys can't do the same, they can't protect themselves and us as effectively. |

'Cause then they would be less intimidating. Killing someone (guilty or not) puts fear into others. |

Because criminals don't use non-lethal weapons. Why don't you become a cop in a high crime area and try to make an arrest of a known drug dealer? The last thing you will hear while trying to grab your taser is the guy laughing and a loud Bang. |

because criminals dont use non lethal weapons. |

The bad guys are using real bullets. Less lethal is used primarily for non-lethal situations. If someone escalates to a deadly force situation then I am allowed by state law to use lethal force. Going against a gun with a Taser would be stupid.
Tranquilizers would be a huge liability. |

Because their to scared. A cop is nothing without that gun he or she carries on their hip. The only reason they have any authority is because they feel like they have the power to injure you or take your life and get away with it. |
|

Because non lethals are not 100% effective. For example, to effectively use pepper spray you have to be pretty close to the suspect. Same applies to the taser.
It would be unreasonable to expect a police officer to approach a suspect, armed with a gun, and have to move to within 10 feet of the suspect to use a taser on him, and hope that the suspect isn't wearing a thick jacket that will prevent the probes from making contact with his skin.
Maybe in 50 years, we will have an effective weapon that can instantly stun a suspect, but we don't now. |

Dear Bachata,
I believe in gun control myself. After all, 80% of people who are killed in the US are killed by guns that they or their family members own. It's crazy here in the US how people can purchase semi-automatic weapons (to kill what? A herd of stampeding elephants?)
But regarding law enforcement? Please read my story below:
My husband's work almost moved us to Columbine CO, except that my husband chose the CA assignment over Columbine. Except for that, our HS freshman age daughter might have been in Columbine HS during the massacre. That left me shaking in my shoes for weeks! As it was, my huband's company lost two children of employees at Columbine HS that day, and we've never stopped grieving for those children.
Regarding the Columbine slayers: do you think those two boys would have killed themselves so soon if they thought the police would be unarmed? They could have moved onto neighboring streets and continued their slaughter if that were the case, They just wanted to make sure they were never caught, that they ended up dead, and that meant shooting themselves.
MY POINT: Gun control must begin with unarming the public, NOT with unarming law enforcement. |
