I am afraid that is the law of the land now all to-do with health and safety at work don't be to surprised if the Fire crew get their fingers rapped for jumping in. that happened in Tayside early on this year where a fireman jumped into the river Tay at Perth to save a young woman who tried to drown herself He was suspended from work pending an enquiry it was only a public outcry that saved him from loosing his job .but they could have thrown him the lifebelt.
Its what we call the idiots running the asylum. |

"Me and my mate jumped in, swam across, but by the time we got there he was under the water and we couldn't see anything," Mr Curwen said.
If the police went in they would have been to late also.
Tragic consequences of alcohol consumption in vast quantities. |

A Police Officers main priority is saving life. However, this has to be risk accessed in that if the officer feels that they would be risking their own life by trying to save that of someone else then they are within their rights to not put their own life at risk, as would anyone else.
This may sound harsh but it only makes headlines when its a Police Officer or other public servant, that doesn't risk their life for someone else.
There have been cases in the past where people have risked their lives trying to save someone else only to die themselves in the process meaning 2 or more tragic losses. |

If police officers feel that their own life would be put at risk they don't have to give it up, however if they are pcso's all they need do is report what they see. |

Is this just another statement to knock our serving police officers. Did you see the video evidence of the vile hooligans attacking the police in Manchester last night
Why Oh why was that large screen not set up in Glasgow. It would have saved 100000 four hundred return mile journeys for ticket less supporters. No word from the green environmental mob here on so called carbon footprint saving. |

Unfortunately, it is very common for people trying to save others to drown themselves. Remember the parents in (I think) Portugal who all jumped in the sea to save thier young children. 4 of5 of the adults who jumped in were drowned whereas the children actually survived.
Its very easy to say you should just go for it, and I think most popel writing about it probably would, but its not always the best thing to do.
As for the life ring not being thrown, that's crazy if its true.
EDIT FOund the link.

Because they are not allowed to risk their own safety under a Labour Health and Safty law which the Tories say they will remove if and when they come to power.
It's in the Sun newspaper |

You're absolutely right; there is no excuse, other than currents made the water unsafe to swim in, which I didn't read in the story.

Police officers are not allowed to rescue those in difficulty in water. If the victim was drowning. Then it is likely the police officer would drown? unfotunalty its gota be put in to perspective. 1 unfortunate man drowning? or a number of police offices (un-trained in water rescue) drowning aswell?
Im sure they wanted to help. But if it is you'r job. You stick to the rules. The police are not monsters, Most do infact join in order to give something back to the community. What about the hooligans and thugs that set upon one single police officer last night!! he was doing his job and got severely beaten for it!! because a TV wasn't working. Pathetic!!! |

I dont know the details of this incident. Any accident where someone dies is tragic.
Did you know that police officers are now not trained in lifesaving skills? This maybe differant in other forces but true of my force.
I know that if I was there I would be tempted to jump in, but from the sounds of it people were in already. |

Everything these days is all tied up in Red tape. I watched a programme the other day about police and they had come across a car that had been set alight a few seconds before they arrived. They arent allowed to put it out so they had to wait for the fire service and by the time they arrived, the car was destroyed, whereas the police using an extinguisher could have minimised the damage. |

I cant belive that the police stood by and let the public help and not do anything them selves.
My name is leanne and the man who drowned in the river exe was my farther.
i was horrfied to find out the details of this and am still awaiting verious reports from the police and corinor.
The police stood by and watched my dad die. i never even had chance to say goodbye to him!
if it was another officer or a friend or family in the water those offiers would not have thought twice about helping him. but when its someone else family they dont care enough to help! |

they are only fit for speeding fines or harrassing people. our police force is so!!! bad as to be frankly!! embarassing. why any one would call the clowns out for any thing more than an illegaly parked car! is beyond me. to see them let a man drown, 'or in one case' even a lttle boy!! drown is no surprise to me at all. |

.. .this can't be good

Actually, it is a crime in most jurisdictions for a police officer to ignore people in distress. Just as a doctor or nurse is bound by law to help injured or ill people, a police cannot ignore someone who is hurt. It is called 'failure to render aid'. They should be reported by all and then take it to the local media to make sure the police dept doesn't try to ignore the complaints as well. |

It's all because of stupid health and safety, if they'd have jumped in they'd have been sacked.
How bloody ridiculous is that? It's just like those community officers who stood by and let a little 8 year old boy drown....purely because of health and safety.I think it's bloody stupid!!
Someone's life can be lost, because it's not safe to jump in the river.
The police need to start sorting out their priorities, and I can say 100% I would never phone the police if i was in trouble or needed anything sorting.
They are useless |
