Because they made such nice cups of tea. We British just couldn't resist that Typhoo stuff and due to the dirty water at the time, the tea was the only thing that stopped up from dyeing of food poisoning.
However, India did quite well out of it too and we built all their cities and railway lines and train stations that still stand even now. And they still do quite well at cricket. |

Turning India, a depraved backwater, into the largest democracy in the world can hardly be described as rape. |

THE ENORMOUS HEAD

Because the Indian Hindu ruling caste and a number of other people - Sikh s for example benefited from it.
Without the British you would still have the Cult of Thugee , no trains , no Democracy and no access to Southall.

India owes the British for medical science, radio, television, the internet, sanitation, the combustion engine, railways, roads, industry, electricity.....christ i could go on for ever....NOW. when are you going to start facing up to your little Indian responsibilities and pay us back? or are you going to claim that you would have all sat in your mud huts inventing that stuff your selves?....any chance of you lot seeing the good bits for a change??? or shall we start screaming about the Romans. ((get a life.)) incidental, my Grandfather was in India with the British army for fifteen years, and he was looked after, and stayed with an Indian family who adored him, and HE them. we have photo's of them all playing and picnicking, and even one of their little boy wearing my grandfathers ceremonial hat...(plume and all)...... BUT oddly we don't have any photos of my Grandfather raping every body. perhaps he was just shy. |

All imperialism is bad, but the British Empire was way better morally than the French, German, Portuguese and Dutch empires. Take a look at the carnage that happened in Vietnam and Algeria before the French left there for example |

Out of date question. Britain also raped its own working-class population at the time, and still does.
Britain is long gone from India, and we don't want it back. We've got enough problems with the sons of Pakistanis and Bengalis who have come here and are trying to rape us. Despite the SWP and the Liberal do-gooders, we are just about keeping our collective legs together. |

Because it was profitable, and there was no one around to stop us as we had the strongest navy during the period of British Empire expansion.
Why do you think the British Empire was the most successful of all time? |

'Cause we could not find anywhere else at the time.
Why did the the rich families of India rape their own country before and after? |

To make money. India was full of exotic trade goods and Britain didn't want to give it up until recently. |

It was the age when European countries had empires and they thought they were superior, but that time has now past.
It's silly to compare it now with modern thinking in Britain where most of the population didn't want Iraq or Afghanistan or probably anywhere else for that matter, and that includes Northern Ireland as well.
The only thing stopping Ireland from being reunited is the Northern Irish themselves, as most of them don't want a united Ireland (though I'm sure it will happen eventually). |

Because the monarchy and a number of lords felt it was their destiny to have a true and endless empire. Google "White Man's Burden," and that will likely give you some more information.
But, aside from this, India was warm, had good and exotic food, abundant resources, a massive population who could be subjugated and strategic trade ports. It was an imperial asset, greater than any of the island nations they had dominated and so it was one of the last for them to let go.
Basic western Imperialism. Thats the A to Z of it. |

That's what empires do. All have throughout history. All except the United States. This country has helped rebuild most of the countries after winning a war with them. The problem is the US is not an empire. Not really. So our over spending leaves the door open for the United States to be taken over by others |

Money.
We also took Brazil's rubber trade, stole South Africa from the Dutch, nevermind the use of concentration camps, were involved in the slave trade and invaded a number of other countries but apparently we're the good side. |

That's not an answer that can be answered in this forum or in a paragraph or two. But while some of us are pondering that question, what about the rape of the West Indies, not to mention good old Northern Ireland? What about Parts of Africa that the British still kept under their rule until this century? |

One word: Arrogance
Addition: I wondered what this answer would get for reactions. One only has to know what the attitudes of a monarchy was like to know why they would "rape" another country. They deemed it their "god given right" to take what they wanted. The ultimate definition of arrogance. |
