Well, I can think of 2 reasons.
1. They won't fit thru the drive thru car wash.
2. There is a lot of equipment on a fire truck. They probably need to make sure it doesn't get tampered with, moved or stolen. |

Its their equipment, they take care of their own equipment. |

Most fire departments have spare time between fire emergencies to do this. Think of it as getting to know your equipment. Why pay someone when you have the manpower to do it yourself. |

they should wash it themselves
Do you realize how much down time firefighters have?
ANd I am not belittling them, just stating facts |

We make the rookies do it, its part of how they earn their way, and to those above who say we sit around and wait for fires, that is only one aspect of the job, who do you think extricates people from mangled car wrecks? or is usually on scene first at medical calls?(no dis to paramedics we know you guys are really busy). |

With the elected officials and legal advisers in my town, it boils down to money and liability.
There is too high a risk of damage to fire apparatus (which cost well over $250,000 a bare-bones unit), damage to equipment, theft of electronics and/or gear, plus the biggie: liability insurance should one of the hired cleaners get hurt on town property.
With the volunteer firefighters in my town, it's a matter of pride. Especially when they are being washed for a parade or competition: you should see our trophy case. |

Because fire fighting is a priority, we pay firemen to be on duty and wait for a fire.
Because of that, there is a lot of time where there isn't a fire happening. We're already paying the firemen, so why pay someone else do to it? |

cuz they are not lazy and they usually have a little time to kill |

They have a lot of down time. Why use taxpayer dollars to pay for something they can do themselves? |

Because they have a lot of time between fires and emergencies in most fire stations. They also take pride in their equipment, and make sure everything is in working order. |

It's part of their job. Inmates is a bad idea as they could damage equipment. I am a police officer and It's my responsibility to keep my police car clean. I'm not complaining as I don't want anyone to touch my stuff. |

Their funds are a little limited in most cases. Your tax dollars pay for them. It is their way of helping keep taxes lower and using the money given for more important things like equipment to save lives. |

Its called "financial cutbacks". |

I've seen fire departments who go 5 years without fighting a fire. What else would they do all day besides sit around? |
|

Because it's their job. They sit on their butts for 18 of their 24 hour shift, so washing the trucks is just part of their job. |

good question.they should have people that have been arrested and placed on community service do it.not the theives.just minor offenders of offenses |

I'm just doing a thing on Firefighters using every letter of the alphabet and relating each letter to a thing related to firefighting. B = Bucket from days gone by, R= Rescue and so on You guys earn your pay and very possibly are underpaid.
What I'm putting together is more a kids thing just to let them know what a great job you guys do. Be happy to e-mail you a copy when I'm finished.
Stay safe,
