Why do Police not give a damn about people will illegal number plates?

Why do Police not give a damn about people will illegal number plates?

This is really ticking me off.

Why are there so many people on UK roads who have illegal number plates?

I mean people who have misaligned letters, italic fonts, bunched up letters, bolts in silly places, etc etc.

If a car is involved in an accident, say a hit and run, and a potential witness tries to read the number plate, they may not be able to read it properly, and the criminal will get away.

By far, this makes the streets more dangerous, and in fact, it makes the UK law and police look stupid.

These people driving cars with illegal plates do so in front of the Police. Aren't Police supposed to be pushing "Polic-y".

i think the fine for these plates is £1000 (up to). If we stop and fine every single one of them, the govenment could potentially gain £700m - £1bn. I am sure this will help our ailing government finances.

Bottom line, why are people allowed to get away with this. And have the Police been told not to do anything ?

Psychokr- I can see your point about motor cyclists, although the Police could act whilst the bikes are parked (at McDonalds etc etc).

Ansell A - "Important" crime or not, this indicates the Police have better things to do. I think the Police work very hard, but there are times when they are merely patrolling. This is the time that they should make stops and fine people.

I see what you mean that it does not make the streets more dangerous, but it does make it harder to have justice.

Perhaps these safety cameras should be modified to detect altering font characters.

Moogy - My area is the Met. I am not sure why your Police force are pulling you over when your plates are legal. That is ridiculous.

You say "More serious problems to be dealt with". This could be done when Police are patrolling.

Sheetwow - What you are saying is good. however I have not heard of any of my aquaintances being pulled over for their number plates.

I total agree the police should give on the spot fines for crimes like this
In America you can only buy plates from government agents .
Why not over here or bring it in that they fail the MOTS that would make people change them
There has been many times I have been driving and think what is that plate supposed to say?
I just think people who drive around with plates where they have to put what the plates says in small wording underneath are just so SADDDDD

Yes police are busy but if they pull cars over for the small crimes they may find bigger crimes ie not MOT insurance drugs etc (im not say all people who have modified plates are drug deals or so on ) but how hard would it be to give a on the spot fine!

They do care and they do stop and prosecute a lot of people for it.
However in the list of "important" crimes, this comes very low down the list and as there has been a massive reduction in traffic police in recent years (in favour of "safety" cameras) then chances are people will get away with it for longer.

It does not make the streets more dangerous, it just makes it slightly more difficult to trace them.

If the police are on general patrol rather than going to a specific incident, they will stop any vehicle displaying illegal registration plates. The other crime is driving with fog lights on, again this is against the law and also attracts an on the spot fine. I don't know why some idiots think it's legal, it's only legal if the visibility is down to 100 metres (due to fog!) or there is falling snow.

I cant stand the police, but this is a classic example of how the police just can't win. They DO stop drivers with non standard number plates, who then cry victimisation. Then you come along and accuse the police of not giving a damn.
Sometimes you're damned if you do and damned if you don't!

I simply dont agree, this week i personally have given 2 tickets for number plates not correct lettering, and 3 vehicle rectification notices for same thing.

I personally will leave people alone if tyhe nu,ber plate would be readable by an ANPR camera, because if it is... then why waste process money on it to achieve lttle result.

The problem is, the majorioty of the day we are going from call to call dealing with other issues, we dont get much patrolling time these days.
Mostly doing paperwork.

The other problem is its a hell of a lot of paperwork for something relatively minor (in the grand scale of things) and most officers after a few years in the job build up their own sense of proportionality which generally doesnt include the motoring offences which dont directly affect life or limb.

Too much paperwork.

i do agree with you in a way, but if the persons on a bike, (i am a biker but have a normal plate...) the police will not chase them as it could cause an accident, so really, how do you stop these people from doing it??

Bear
I'll firstly apologise for not reading all your question, as it does go on some... and then some more!!

Having an illegal number plate is not such a big issue when there are more serious matters out there. I see plenty of illegal plates, however most are readable... and that for me is what really counts. If its not readable then I'll deal with the motorist and have them change it.

Generally Traffic Departments deal with this type of issue. Beat officers just haven't got the time.
