Why do cops always have to resort to scare tactics, and why do they always have to YELL!?

"That One"
So that witnesses and the idiots with the videocameras can hear that the cop was telling him to "stop resisting" or "put his hands in the air."

We are taught to yell, for two reasons.... To get your attention, and the attention of anyone else around. That way, if the situation escalates, there are plenty of witnesses to confirm the orders were clear and understandable.

Quite often, the person the officer is dealing with is under stress and may not hear as plainly as they normally do.

As far as the "scare tactics", you are going to have to provide an example to get a reasonable answer.

I have never had a cop yell at me like that. Well except the one day that my (ex) boyfriend, who is a cop, let me borrow his truck and I hit the pole in the McDonald's drive thru!!! He was pretty mad.

Because the phrase, "Will you pretty please get in the back of the squad car?" wouldn't be very effective.

most people dont understand what cops go through day in and day out. its a miracle that any of them can keep their sanity.

lithium630
because people are not smart enough to listen.

preacher7003
believe it or not, they are scared to. they never know if that person or persons, is a ax murderer, or just a person going to church. also their training, tells them to take control of the scene. no matter who it is.

Since you don't specify on the "scare tactics" I won't comment but as far as yelling, we want your attention NOW. You have done something to attract our attention and we want yours until this is settled. That means turn down the radio, hang up the phone, etc.. As soon as you listen up the tone & volume will go down. We are trained to be polite but firm and yes yelling is sometimes required. I like many people have been stopped for speeding etc. and trust me my window is down, interior lights on {if dark outside} and my hands on top of the wheel when the officer approaches. He has 100% of my attention when dealing with me. I have yet to be yelled at by an officer in my life other than the words "WATCH OUT or DUCK" etc. by a fellow officer. Trust me I don't stand there and ask why when that happens, there is plenty of time later to find out why.

They have to get your attention as well as others who may be around to warn them what is going on. As for scare tactics like pointing a gun is for if you have a weapon on you. They need to protect themselves and you.

Spoken Majority
I don't yell until I have told you over and over to do what I ask. it isn't that we like to yell, it is that the criminals CAN'T F'ING LISTEN.

I don't always yell or resort to scare tactics. Hell, I rarely do.

How do you like the that? I just shot your BS statement full of holes hater.

Well... the simple answer is they don't "Always" yell or "Always" have to resort to scare tactics.

When a police officer responds to a call he has little idea of what he will face, if any. The Officer often has to take charge of the situation as it's often emotionally charged. They have no idea if you're a good person or an dangerous idiot.

Try placing yourself in their shoes and ask that question of yourself.

MSAD
"have to resort" -- IE. you did not do what they asked the first time.

Next time - don't make the officer ask twice.

It is the result of improper training. They are NOT taught to yell at citizens, and that kind of behavior is not tolerated in respectable police departments. If you have suffered from this kind of imporper police behavior, you should report it by calling the main number, and asking to report a complaint about a police officer, they will connect you with the right person.

Because you criminals don't LISTEN the first time.

tacomadc
No, these days they just taser you, then they don't have to use ANY of their police training!

If they yell they think it shows authority. When they yell at me it just makes me more pissed off. I respond much better to a soft appeal to my common snese, which is usually out the window and the reason I am dealing with them in the first place.
